Where is the best deal on portable scanners for road trips?

Good morning everyone. I think there may have been some threads prior to the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays that regarded portable scanners at a very reasonable price. I've looked for those threads to no avail. Would anyone be able to recommend a retailer that has a scanner at a reasonable price? I've been to the "Big Blue store" and hardly received any customer service, as well as all some of their competitors.

Any insight on scanners?

Eric,
I wonder what you need a scanner for that a good camera could not accomplish without adding yet another piece of equipment to your "tool belt."

Hiya Cilla! I actually still do non-video shops on occasion yet need a scanner for the road when I upload receipts and materials quickly.
I do too. And I find that I can easily take pix of same and upload. Road trips mean toting so much stuff that I would not give up my camera for receipts and other collateral.

The best portable scanner you can buy is a digital camera.

So my Nikon D5100's are 16mp portable scanners.

If space is at a premium when you travel, I agree with Wales and Tech, a camera can and will do the job. Of course, if you get one of those odd sized receipts, then you're going to have to crop and probably resize the image. In that instance, I can see the advantage of a portable scanner as a time saver if you're not familiar with whatever photo editing software might be on your computer.

Back around Christmas, there was a discussion here about a portable scanner but I'm drawing a blank on the name, mydesk, desk something...I can't remember and it's driving me sane.

Heck,
After nearly 7 years of MS, I may have cropped a receipt pic twice!

Some people have also talked about scanning apps. If those work it would be cheap and save carrying another piece of equipment. While Eric is a big strong guy, for me one more piece of equipment would probably break this camel's back and the volume of cords and chargers is out of control. At least my digital camera can serve other purposes on the road so for now my video cam is the only uni-tasker allowed.

I love taking my handy flatbed scanner on road-trips.
It saves time to just plug the USB connecter to my laptop and I can begin scanning images right away.
No worries about good lighting or a flat surface for the camera to take good shots.
Don't know what I would do without it.
Mine is a Canoscan Lide 90.
It is very thin and fits into my 'techno bag' without a problem.
Thank you everyone! After giving it some thought, I'll try using my Android phone as a scanner. I just downloaded a scanner application yet I may just do it the old fashioned way by taking pictures and then saving it to a file to be uploaded later. I was highly considering a flat scanner, like ambergs7 alluded to yet it may just be one more thing in the tech bag that will give added weight.
you could get a memory card that has wifi built in called eyefi and will send the pics to your laptop...

I love my Neat Receipt Scanner. Got a refurb from Neat for $100 at the end of the year. I much prefer scanning to taking a picture. My hand just isn't that steady sometimes.

A camera with vibration control setting is essential in this business.

I bought a small portable scanner through Costco online that you just run over the page. Works fast and was only about $79.
I use Dropbox on my Android and send all my receipts to my computer. Even if I am sitting at home next to my scanner, I still take a picture on my cell phone. It is much easier and then the picture is right there. Just use good natural light and try and take without a flash for the best pictures. Always look at your picture to make sure the picture is what you took. Sometimes corners are cut off.

For people who do not have a smartphone, just take a picture and send it to your email and then save the photo on your computer. Click browse and find documents and the photo.

I know some of you might think this is basic, but I just had to explain to a few shoppers what to do when they could not get their scanner's to work. Some people are embarrassed they do not know. Not everyone grew up with computers.
