Tell me about phone shops

If I posted this in the wrong section, please let me know.

I have signed up with a few MSC's now (not as many as a lot of you I'm sure), and a couple of them keep sending me things about doing phone shops. From the description it looks like an easy job, and not too horrible pay. Are these generally not too bad, or not worth the time?

I've signed up to do my first two phone shops early next month. They are recorded shops where I'll call a number that will actually record the call. Fairly easy because you can have the guidelines printed out right in front of you. There are also phone shops that are not recorded, so you need to make notes and fill out a report.

As I said, these will be my first phone shops. From what I've read here, I'm comfortable with the MSC I'll be doing them for, and it appears that the payment will be in line with the work involved.

I have done several phone shops...the key is to remember..

1. *67 to block you number before you dial the number to record the call. Otherwise the other end can see you on caller id and call you out on it.

2. If calling to somewhere you don't know, pull up mapquest and look at the area so you have an answer for where you live (if that type of call -schools, storage places, furniture rentals etc).

3. Make sure you don't talk to much, allow lots of silence in the phone call, this keeps the agent talking. Ask you requireds early in the call, then let them talk. Some calls can take 2 minutes where some can take 15+ minutes.

4. Make sure the house is quiet in the background, no kids yelling, knocking on doors, dogs barking ect...

5. Have a phone number ready in case they need one (if part of your scenario) Google voice is good for that.
They are really nice "fillers" when you are route shopping. If I'm staying in a hotel in Utah or Wyoming, 7:30 AM MST is too early for most video shop jobs (and retail traditional jobs), but I can call a few East Coast senior living facilities and make $25.00 while I am waiting for my target's office to open up locally.

I do them with my phone on the left ear, pen and paper taking notes on the right. These shops are best immediately written upon completion of the call; if I return to write the report a few hours later my accuracy is diminished.

SecretAgent Mom is right about leaving silent pauses, and about background quiet. Let the target talk, that's who the client is interested in.
I do only phone shops and love them. I teach school, so can plug them out on the way (if they don't require recording or notes) or at lunch. If I forget to block my number and someone asks, I say I just moved or that I just never changed my cell phone number when I moved a while back. So many people have out of state numbers nowadays.

I reiterate that you should let them do as much of the talking as possible, unless your instructions tell you otherwise. This is especially true if you do the same phone shop many times, and you start to learn what it is that the client/MSC is looking for them to say.

Phone shops obviously pay less than location shops, but I figure that with the amount of time I'd drive some place, shop it, and return home, I can usually do enough phone shops to make up for the time, plus there is no gas cost. If you get good at them, the MSCs will usually throw you more, too. I consider myself really lucky that I can make a "full" MS salary using only my phone. And, I write off the montly cell bill on my taxes, too!
I wish I had more phone shops but I get what I can when I can. Even tho the no. is suppose to be blocked if recorded I have found merchants can see my caller ID. If someone asks where is my area code I state it is in TX but I have a cell phone. They should be satisfied with that.
Cheryljane *67 the call first and then dial the number; it will come up as a private call. I use it for cell, landline and 800 exchange calls.

@Mom2twoleos good luck on your first 2 phone shops.
You can't block your phone number if you call a toll free number to reach the target. If they're paying for the call, they get to see the numbers that are calling them. It keeps someone from running up their bill maliciously. If they get repeated crank calls on their toll free they know who's doing it and the phone company can take legal action against the caller, so it is not possible to block your number when you call a toll free number.

Thanks itsasecret I did not know that about the 800 toll exchanges. Is that true for the prophet generated recorded calls as well? That is what I was referencing; the target calls that you contact on behalf of the MS's.
Phone shops are a pain if they involve a target, who 90% of the time is not available. sad smiley Another thing is that you frequently receive call backs for a length of time afterwards, (are you sure you don't want to sign up for this facility, buy this car, etc.)

Otherwise, I don't mind doing them.
