Circuit City and shopper equipment

Circuit City announced today they will be closing their remaining stores. There is a reasonable chance that shoppers may find equipment that will be useful at a decent price. While equipment has been discussed elsewhere, I thought I would share what I will be looking for. Of course I will have researched prices on the web so I am not paying more at the store than I would be paying by purching on line.

New laptop computer
Headset to use via a little plug in on my telephone (I hate holding the phone during training calls while trying to take notes as well)
New digital camera as mine is developing problems.

Other things shoppers may want to consider are digital voice recorders (DVRs), thumb drives (also called jump drives), external drives to backup the computer, all-in-one printer/fax/scanner/copier

Are you concerned that there's no store to return defective merchandise, particularly for the big ticket items? Manufacturer's warranties still apply, but inconvenience is greater.
Not really. If the price is right then I will deal with the manufacturer. Generally stuff either works out of the box or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it will go back immediately and if there are "as is" signs, stuff will be checked on site before purchase.

I would check warranty on big ticket items. I had a discussion with CC a while back when they called me to renew the warranty on my flat panel TV. The warranty in question was for a flat panel that died during warranty and was replaced under warranty because parts were not available. I inquired about the extended warranty purchased from them on the replacement set. I was told that the warranty is actually handled by a third party and that even if CC closed the third party would still be liable for the in home service.

Certainly any floor model I would want to see appropriately discounted and see it in operation.
Here's the info from the web:

Stopped by my local CC today and they had 3 versions of DVR, none of which were adaptable to being able to transfer files to your computer.

No external microphones available that could be used with DVRs

The "sale" price was the best price on laptops as the best deals were 10% off or "sale" price. Still way too expensive.

Some modestly interesting digital cameras but they will have to do a whole lot better than "sale" price or 10% discount before they are comparable to Buy.com

Came out empty handed and not likely to return any time soon. I think I understand why they are going belly up. Their prices and selection are hardly comparable to on line vendors and their customer service folks are clueless. "DVR? What is that?" "Oh, digital voice recorders. Is that like an MP3 player?" "Yes, that is a very nice camera. Sony makes a lot of cameras. My friend has one like that." Duh . . .

Best Buy has a decent toshiba wireless lappy on sale this week. <$400...winking smiley

Shopping Bama and parts of Georgia.
I'm still learning 24/7.
I read this on a non-MS related forum:

"My friend who works at CC told me that they will be raising prices back up to MSRP and then doing a liquidation "sale" starting at a few percent and gradually increasing the percent shaved off. I doubt there will be any significant savings right now when you actually compare prices of the item, but I'm sure a bunch of people will be suckered in by the "discounts." He isn't sure when they will stop current sales, but he is pretty sure that is the plan with the liquidation based on what his supervisors told him."

Anyway, it was obviously written by an immature teenager (due to his later reference about someone's mom and MILF hunting, so I am not sure how much cred it has, but that sounds just about like what went on with the CompUSA liquidation, so it sounds right. I tried calling the one here to see if they were open, but no one answers. Seems to all dovetail with what Flash said.
