New Car Shops

I did my first new car shop at a dealership this week. NEVER AGAIN! I was expecting to spend 30 minutes and they say bail out at 45 minutes. Easier said than done! It ended up being about and hour and a half. Certainly not worth the pay! And then I feel bad for taking the salesman's time (although I had to wait everytime I tried to leave and he tried to re-sell me by going and talking to his manager). It wasn't busy though. No other customers showed up while I was there. Does anyone here actually like these shops??

Yup.

They're more fun than a human should be allowed to have...especially when it's a Maserati or a Rolls, although I like the Volvo shops too.

You could always do the new car shops that require to go twice,
the 2nd time going back to get a better price...

Now that your back a 2nd time, they really think you want to buy...

I don't mind them. I perform several a month. Nice to sit in a new car with all the bells and whistles - even if just for a while. I plan to go to Galveston in a couple of weeks and have lined up two car shops just to pay the gas and any expenses.
I probably should've said NEVER AGAIN (Unless the price is right) lol. What's the minimum you would do a car shop for?
I got sucked into one ONCE......had to remember what he was wearing...EVERY word he said....not worth 25.00 to me....maybe for 50....
My minimum is most definitely $50.

The ones you have to go to twice start at 65 so they meet your requirement : )

I've done a couple for $20. Hated them. Probably would take $30 or more to get me on a car lot again. Unless I was on a route and needed to kill some time for some reason.

I pray it does not occur that the last thing I did before I died was vacuum the house or eat broccoli.
One thing that might help some of the anxiety with new car shops is to have a "spare" phone number to use that isnt your personal number. I hated the car shops because you are required to give a real phone number for them to call and they will call you....over and over. I got tired of it and "rent" a virtual phone number through a service called Freedom Voice. There are voice mail and/or call forwarding features. It is free the first month then $9.99 per month thereafter. Also there are a variety of vendor options, Im not pushing one over another. This one worked for me beacuse the setup was online. Anyway, it has been nice having a number that exists strictly on your computer as it meets the "real phone number test" and isnt that expensive. Just thought I'd share. have a great day.

Any help is appreciated. smiling smiley
I like cars, so I like car shops. I do about 10 a month. I use a Google Voice account to get around the phone issue. It's free.

No fee, no shop.
I use my real phone number and have never had a problem. They call to follow up and out of courtesy I call them back to say that I my situation changed and I am putting off buying a car at the moment, I tell them that when I am ready I will let them know. Never hear from them again.
I don't mind the time spent at the dealership or even reporting the follow-up calls. What I do mind is the long and redundant survey by one company asking us to answer the same questions over and over again for a totality of over 150 questions, plus over six long narratives. I see no intelligence in this.
I love car shops. If I wasn't already in a lease I would have actually bought the car I was assigned to shopping for!

If I had a spare $135,000, I would have purchased the car I test drive last week as well!
I'm glad I came on tonight to check out the forum. I've got my first two Vehicle Sales Evaluation shops, test drives (getting a bit nervous), in the next couple of weeks and was wondering what kind of hassle follow up calls I'd likely be getting.

But there's been some good ideas and encouraging posts here. Thanks everybody.

dcm, once the required follow-up period for the report is complete, email or call the sales person and tell them you decided to get a competitive model. Thank them for their time and wish them a good day.
OK, I guess it probably would'nt have been so bad if I had gotten anywhere near $50 to do it.
I recently had a high performance sports car shop where the objective was to find out about the company's customization program. As I met with the sales person, I made sure to use the word "unique" several times in my conversation. When I received the follow-up call, I told him that I had found there were 5 other of that particular model in the county where I live and that didn't make it unique enough for me, so I placed an order for an Aston Martin DB-9. He then scored a home run when he asked me if I would cancel the order because they had an exclusive model, limited to 356 vehicles, worldwide.
