anyone doing apartment shops?

If so, please advise your experience. I was assigned one that had a specific person I needed to contact. After 3-1/2 days of calling to get the person I was told by the Mystery Shopping company I could ask for the contact by name. Guess what? Person no longer works there. Mystery Shopping Company put the job on hold. Now I am told it's been cancelled. Seems like I should get paid for taking the time to make the calls and to continually communicate all the way through the process. Now, it looks like I won't get paid anything. I thought shoppers got paid even though the contact person is no longer there. Am I the fool?

they are just not worth it to me.....and NOPE...most of them if there is a target....it's that or nothing!
I used to do them, I used to like them I stopped becaus of extensive editing reviews. One editor would tell me to do one thing, I'd do it, then another editor would tell me to do it another way and i would do it that way, and yet another editor would tell me to do it a different way! It got to the point where my ego was taking a bruising so i stopped working with thecompany. I agree though they should at least pay you for your time.

Don't spin your wheels calling so many times. Call a few times and then email your scheduler for permission to ask for the target by name.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I am thinking of doing them again as I used to do them all the time. However that targeted agent business got me OUT of the apartment shopping business. Now, I am considering it again only because my month is starting out slow. I may kick myself if I should get brave enough to assign one to myself. Randomly catching those agents on the phone is like fishing for sea bass in a swimming pool.
I have found that if a month starts out very slow, I can sort of jump start things with a targeted shop or two. It's like it used to be with lighting a cigarette at a bus stop; as soon as you did so, the bus would finally show up!

Ah yes, back in the days when you could smoke in restaurants the same ploy would guarantee your food was delivered immediately.

I've only tried to do targeted shops a few times. I've found it generally to be a hassle. Occasionally you get lucky and get the target right away. More likely you're chasing them for days and screwing up any schedule you might have.

I like doing the apartment shops, but the targeted ones are too much of a pain. If they paid more for targeted shops than regular shops, I'd be more tempted to do some.

There is one thing that I have never understood about the targeted shops and that is why do they want us to type the narrative if they have a recording of the conversation?

I've wondered about that as well. Someone on this board in an earlier post explained its because the clients don't really wants to listen to the recordings. So they want us to type the narrative up, but still have the recording in case of questions.
In my instructions, it says call, if target does not answer, hang up.

Call again, if target does not answer, ask for target.

If target is not there, call the next day and ask for target.

So, that's 3 times to make an attempt. If you still can't get the target, contact your Scheduler.
I avoid targeted shops. When I cannot reach the target by the due date I contact the scheduler. They, in turn, contact the client, who usually cannot be reached. Then the shop is deleted from "My Jobs". I do not get paid for the time I have spent and it creates havoc with my work schedule.

Buck, I totally agree with you. All that time you spend trying to get the target, as many as 3 time consuming calls and you are paid nothing if you don't get the target.

I won't do those anymore eithersmiling smiley
When I can't get them and I really need to get to that area for a route, I have my brother call and ask for the target to see they are working. I call later on and happen to get them by accident. In the event of a phone hog, I have him call and keep the phone hog on the line talking about stupid crap and asking lots of questions.
What a great idea pretty!!!!! lolol I have friends that can do that for me. lolol

I did one apartment shop for a Prophet company and it was pretty easy.....so when I signed up for the OTHER msc that only does these type of shops and saw a bonus, I thought "Hey, no biggie, I can do this."

I read your posts on this thread and others relating mixed emotions regarding this MSC and those apartment shops. Some of you won't touch them with a ten foot pole. Others scoop them up in a heartbeat. The latter of you are freaking nutso :p

I tried for over a week (including labor day weekend) to get my target. I sat down to finally fill in the report once I got home from the visit and started out pretty strong. Then about an hour into it I was getting pretty frustrated. Once I got to the part about eye and hair color I started to twitch a little. The <percentage completed> bar was filling up and I was pretty sure I was almost finished.....THEN they want me to recall the exact decor of the apartment, the office and the landscaping. They want a complete recollection of the path we took to and through the apartment. I had already repeated myself a gazillion times. It was late, I was tired....I can admit it....I cried a little.

I still look at that shop board sometimes, but it would really take a lot of $$$ to convince me to do another one for them.
Apartment shops are the biggest type of shop I haven't done yet besides gas station audits (and I don't really consider them shops). I'm not very sure I ever want to do one.

This thread reminded me to e-mail the editor for the video apartment I had on Friday. If they are not careful they will cut out the actual interaction. From start to finish it was about nine minutes.
