Can I use this as a Tax Deduction ?

We have all discussed mileage and keeping logs of our shops. If I leave town because of a shop and need to leave my four legged baby with a sitter or kennel can I write that off as an expense? No, laughing at me.

Actually I think that is a good question. Highly unlikely, but a good question nonethelesssmiling smiley

Sorry, but I think not. This is not the place to get the best tax advice. See what you can find at IRS.gov.

Let's see, i think childcare can be partially written off until age 12. Translating to dog years that would be a little over a year and a half. How old is your pooch? Cat, I have no idea. I would be careful though if your child is named "Fido", they may audit you. lol (sorry to laugh, just could not help it)

Actually someone just wrote a column in the local newspaper last week about mythical deductions that are not deductions. Taking off a dog or cat as a dependent along with expenses was listed in the top 5. The IRS is on the lookout for all those Fido's and Tabby's out there being claimed as children. If you have a service dog it might be different, but then if you have a service dog it should be with you and not kenneled.
No, she's not a service dog. Well it was worth asking anyway plus I know some of you did get a laugh out of it!
I'm pretty sure the answer is NO. Care of the dog is not a business expense because it doesn't benefit your business or make you any money. The IRS regs talk about things like "usual and customary" business expenses or something like that. I think the word "necessary" is in there too. Unless the dog transcribes your audio recordings for you, I don't think he's necessary to your business. smiling smiley

I pray it does not occur that the last thing I did before I died was vacuum the house or eat broccoli.
Hmmm. I gotta say my beasties ARE "necessary". Sometimes at the end of a crazy day of shopping, my dogs are the only things keeping me from losing my mind and getting outta this gig. I can kinda see drawing the line at using my chinchillas as a deduction, though. LOL! smiling smiley

one never knows what they will allow as a deduction. They have allowed
things you would never think they would, but on the flip side, they have
disallowed things that most would think are deductible.

Interesting, TechMan. Maybe then I CAN claim the chinchins as a deduction if I describe them as confidential document shredders. smiling smiley

If that works for you let me know so I can deduct the carrots for Bugs and my other "watch" rabbits.

Oh, wow, Lisa, you have bunnies? I used to have an awesome house rabbit. He was litter box trained, played with the dogs, and was a great character.

Mine are not in the house. They are actually wild rabbits and appear to be descended from a baby that took refuge on my patio one year. There are a couple of broken spots in the fence that I refuse to get fixed because it would make it difficult for them to get in and out. Inside the yard they are safe from coyotes and the covered patio protects them from hawks and owls. For the price of a couple pounds of carrots every few weeks, I am the only neighbor who is not @#$%& about the rabbits eating their flowers. Apparently they are smart enough to not bite the hand that feeds themgrinning smiley

I had wild rabbits on my property years ago. I also
have a family of deer that show up every spring and summer.
I thought maybe they are the rabbits but I don't see how they
would be able to catch them.

That's so neat, Lisa. I get so tired of people that don't want to share a little of the planet with animals. It's great that you aren't one of them.

We got our house rabbit when somebody dropped him off in a box on our doorstep after Easter one year. Guess they thought that because we were involved in dog rescue at the time, we might be a soft touch for a bunny as well. Well, the jerks were right. Within 24 hours, the fuzzy guy had a $200 mansion with every imaginable toy a rabbit could want, and both hubby and I were poring over books and mags on the training and care of a house rabbit. smiling smiley

Huh? Did you miss something in that post?

The deer are year round in this neck of the woods. It is amazing for me to live within two minutes of a major interstate and have so much wildlife. It really is the best of both worlds.

BTW, the first part of my post was directed at techman, shopgal snuck in between.

I get aggravated with the people that move here to get out of the city and have a little nature only to get upset when the nature gets in their way. For me it is preferable to just work around it all. The fence was from when I had a dog and realized that it would not be a coyotes fault if they mistook her for prey. Carrots keep the bunnies out of my herbs and some stinky spray keeps the deer from eating my hibiscus in the front yard. It's all goodsmiling smiley

Isn't it ridiculous? Life is supposed to balance out, you know, a little give and take. That goes for living with the other creatures on this planet. I love being reminded that there is more to the world than running around in my car sucking up exhaust fumes, gazing upon one more of a kazillion fast food joints, and roaming around the concrete wombs we call malls.
