Less Expensive/Smaller Car Shops?

I keep seeing shops for luxury vehicles, but what about inexpensive or compact cars? Or used cars? And MSCs that I should check out? My car is spending too much time in the shop and it might be time to at least starting looking around.

That's a good plan. I was in the market and basically did about 50 car shops, which really helped me make my buying decision.

There are several MSCs which have new car shops. Several of the biggest MSCs have car shops, and then there are MSC which are devoted mostly to cars and motorcycle shops. Yopu just need to do some basic research and you'll find them. Almost all brands get shopped. Generally they want you to look at mid-level sedans, but there are exceptions. I've never seen a shop for a used car. Good luck.

All the car shops I've done are regular vehicles. I find them easier to do, funny enough.
I have shopped Toyotas in NC an SC. Have also shopped whole "families" of dealerships in the DC metro area and in the NYC/NJ area. All less expensive or mid-range vehicles. More than 75% of my car shops are video though.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.

Thanks, if I'm going to start looking, I might as well get paid to do it. :-)

You're right, I am finding that the shops are generally for the sedans that are a bit larger and more money than I'm interested in spending, but it might at least give me a feel for which dealers I'm most comfortable with. In reality, I'm probably looking for a certified, pre-owned compact-sized hatchback.

River,
I used Consumer Reports Magazine's annual issue showing the ratings and repair histories of USED car models and years to narrow my search. Based on that and on my local test drives, in 2011 I purchased a 2008 Honda Fit (hatchback). It seems to be my ideal MS car; highly reliable, better gas mileage on the road than th EPA rating (actual road MPG is 37-39 mpg); no repairs in over 30,000 miles of my ownership; superior safety technology. It now has around 72K miles and I expect to drive her (named Hermoine) to about 200K.

For the superior quality and reliability of the Honda Fit, I was willing to pay about $1500 more than for lesser cars of the same vintage and I firmly believe that I am getting my money's worth.

The Fit keeps catching my eye too. The Nissan Versa got my attention first, but now I keep coming back to the Fit. I was wondering if it was as reliable as it is pretty, so thanks for the information and the great review. I hope she's as magickal as her name!
River,
The Fit from 2008 has topped CR's reliability chart for used small cars every year since it was introduced. It doesn't getmuch better than that.

Nice! Thanks for the info. :-)
I'm terrified of car shops! Plus, they don't seem to pay too well in my area. I know 'walesmaven' does a lot of video shops so they pay more, but there don't seem to be many here. Mostly they go for $18-$25 ea. Sometimes they bonus for a little more, but with the salesperson interaction, test drive, office interrogation about buying, and the report, that seems like a lot of work for not a lot of money. I could do a couple post offices and a Taco Bell for that much money - and it would take half as much time!
Totally agree with you, Lisa. Occasionally they get bonused nicely around us, but I still don't find them worthwhile to do. Thy take way too much time and effort.

Speaking of time and effort, though, the TB report is ridiculously long for a fast food assignment, dontcha think?

Yes, it is. But I've done so many of them, I can just about do it with my eyes closed. Plus, my other half and I really like their food. Mine will cover two meals for me (saving grocery $$) - and they're really close. I can pick up 3 or 4 less than 10 miles from home. If I'm going downtown or to the north side, I can grab 2 or 3 to fill a small route for half a day. Then I just watch all my DVR programs while I write in the evening. Another good thing about these is the scheduler - she is such a sweetie! I will do just about anything for her.
The scheduler is most definitely a sweetie. I wouldn't have ever considered doing the TBs had it not been for her. But it looks like we will be losing her. Bummer.

She's taking another job, at least for the summer. She doesn't know if she will be welcomed back in the fall or not.

From what I understand, the big boss's daughter and the other schedulers will split the work.

I think buying a used car is not a bad option for an individual having limited amount of budget. The limited credit options make people buying cars of compact size, But they can buy the luxury cars also if they go for used cars. Some websites are also there which provide you the compariosion option and buying option of second hand one also.
I have purchased lease return vehicles from a dealer that are one or two years old, have about 13,000 miles on then, are still under warranty, and cost many thousands less. They have all of the maintenance records at the dealership, and you know they are not a disaster hehicle. Then I keep them another ten years or so.
