anyone have a usb voice recorder?

Hmm? Did a fine dining lunch and the report was long on narrative and quotes. Had a hard time remembering quotes. Trying to figure out how I could use my iphone to record a 90 minute meal.

Not for quotes but a very easy way for times is to turn volume off and do screen print of the clock at every person at the table. Fill in notes as you can but you have a painless way to at least get times for those not needing seconds just minutes.
I just got a Sony ICD-PX333 at Amazon and I like it a lot. Comes with 4GB, records up to 1,073 hours, batteries last up to 96 hours, USB port, easy to use, gets great reviews. Plug it in to the computer and you can read .mp3 sound files off of it.

The price fluctuates a lot. Right now it is $57.99 but I grabbed one last week when it briefly dropped to $46 with free shipping.
I have been using a Sony ICD-PX820 for a few years now. I leave it in my pants pocket and it records the whole shop. When I get home I upload the recording to my laptop using a USB cable and play it back as needed using my laptop speakers.
Do you use an external microphone with it or just the built in one?

I did a casual dining shop this past weekend and turned my iPhone's recorder on and just placed it on the table, face-side down. It picked up all of the audio and it helped me with some of the timings, too. There was music playing in the restaurant, but our voices (and the server's) could still be easily heard. I'm sure this method would work for FD as well.
Not sure why you need a USB -- to transfer the file? If the recording on your phone is sufficient and that's the issue, you can just get a free Dropbox account. I upload using the program on my phone and then listen at home. Very easy.
Thanks for you replies. I asked for a usb so I can keep it on my keychain laying on the table . Too stupid to figure out how to use iphone with dropbox. I thought I was a genius when I got to save pdfs using google drive
I have a droid, but downloaded a recording app. I am sure the App Store has many options. I have been able to record multiple meals with no problem. My screen turns dark fairly quick but it keeps on recording. I just set the phone down on the table. I have been able to record the whole meal and listen to the playback as I am writing the report without draining the battery. One of these was over two hours.

Shelly, exactly what app did you get? I've had trouble finding one that works well. Thanks.
I use my Android to record, unfortunately if a call or text comes in it voids the whole recording =O
I use the Easy Voice Recorder app. On my phone getting a call or text has not disrupted the voice recorder; however, I know on my last phone it disrupted timing. You can set your phone to airplane mode to avoid this.
I use the same one as Shelly (the free one, not pro). Recently, the recordings became distorted, lots of background noise. Deleted the old app and reinstalled, no problems since.
Thanks Shelly. You don't know how I have cursed my phone for going into airplane mode all by itself O winking smiley Guess someone was trying to tell me something, lol.

I sometimes use my phone, but much prefer to use my SanDisk MP3 player (less than $50 at Radio Shack). I usually clip it to my shirt or bra. If it's clipped to my shirt, I will sometimes drape earbuds around my neck. No one ever knows or says anything. Sound quality is excellent (I have clipped it to my bra and used it for audio recorded shops). Easy to download and very reliable.
Update: I bought a 4 GB usb drive that has a switch to record. It's insane, recorded for 8 hours . Picked up voices loud and clear at 10 ft with the recorder in my shirt pocket. My own voice was so loud it was distorted. I tried my back pocket and it picked up my voice perfectly. Just don't fart. Had a tough time when I recorded for 8 hours str8. So the next day I turned it on only when I shopped so I had 5 separate conversations to monitor. I played it back on my computer and it's remarkable the technology available today.

It's a typo, only $11.32, not 111.32
You might try the Shop-it app. There is a free version and a paid version. It records, takes pics and lets you take notes. You can record, depending on the laws of your state, or just take notes. Your note taking will look like you are having a text conversation. With the paid version, about $2, you can just touch the screen and it marks a time. With either version you can save, name the file and email it to yourself. If your state allows 2 party recording, it plays back on your phone.
I'm pretty happy with the paid version for the longer dining shops that require multiple timings.

Also try doing a search here on the forum. This question comes up pretty often and there are some great tips.

I tried the free Shop-it app to see if I like it, before I buy it the full version. I had trouble using it on my iPhone5.
