Quick question for video shoppers

I have my first extended video shop next week and I'm anticipating about 3 to 4 hours of continuous video. The SD card says it has 14.8 G available. Will that be enough or should I try and buy a larger SD card?

Appreciate your advice.

This may not help. With my older PV-500 which is not HD, I was told a good rule of thumb was 1G equals 1 hour, but thought that HD changed that ratio. Have you been to the VSN forum to check?

First, I advise never to use larger than an 8gb card. The larger gb cards are highly prone to card failure and have ruined more video shops than the recording rigs ever have!

Second what sort of shop would yeild 3-4 hours of continuous video? I have never had anything run longer than 2 hours and that was a new home shops where we had to walk a huge lot as well as plan and cost out the house!!! I am intrigued at the idea of being "on stage" for 3-4 hours without a break. Not anything I would wish on a video novice; that's for sure.

As Lisa advised, the best technical help for video is over at VSN.

I'm shooting HD on my PV 500 and getting roughly 880KB per half hour.

Can you put that into terms I can understand?grinning smiley How many hours per gigabyte or gigabytes per hour?

walesmaven I need to correct my original post. It will actually be 2 sessions at 1.5 to 2 hours each. I went to the VSN and saw that the bigger SD cards are not recommended. I haven't had any problems with this card so far but now I'm nervous about it. I've used it on about 30 shops so far but nothing as long as I will be doing next week. Wondering if I should go and get some smaller cards...

Surely that should be 880MB?
I tend to do everything I am not supposed to do and have been using a 16G card for quite awhile. It still wouldn't hurt for you to switch to a smaller card as long as you test it first. I think it was Katrina that lost some shops on an untested SD card. After that you have done all you can do. I would be surprised if any video shopper said they do not stress about a failure of some sort regardless if it is a tried and true camera/sd card or not.

Don't forget that SD cards only have a limited number of read/write cycles before they croak. It's a high number but after using the same SD card for many years it will eventually reach "end of life".

I was wondering the same thing, but since I have 0 knowledge of the video shopping industry I didn't wanna look like a moron and ask, lol.

Assuming 880 MB per half hour, it would be about 1.7 GB per hour. For easy math, I would estimate 2 GB for an hour and you would have a buffer.

Thank you everyone for the great advice! I really appreciate it. And Lisa, I'll keep using this card for now.
Most active video shoppers watch for sales on SD cards at Costco or office supply stores. I travel with about 6 4gb cards and 8 8gb cards. Regardless of the SD card capacity, I don't want more than 2 shops on any card, to minimize potential losses. Also, I never erase an SD card until that shop has been paid for, even though I copy the video to my computer each evening.

Dr Squash, you are correct, it should be 880 MB per half hour. I posted after a long road trip yesterday. My mind was half thinking I'd made a mistake and the other half was thinking it was correct.

Whatever you do ...never use the Lexar 8GB cards...they will cause the memory to become full and cut off the shop....
Also, don't use the super-mini cards that have to be fitted into a device to fit into the card slot in the recorder!

I had two shops on an 8 GB card and low and behold, my second shop got cut off (I was not anticipating it to go over an hour). Total time for both was just around 2.5 hrs. I would be VERY careful how much you record.
Wow! I have easily done much more time on an 8 gb card. More technical help needed. Try the VSV forum for suggestions from video wxperts.

wales, aren't you still using a camera that is not HD? When we have to go with those it is going to be quite an adjustment from 8G/8 hours to 8G/4 hours.

Lattegal, are you sure the card was empty when you started?

It only had 3 files for a total of 1hr 15 mintues I think. Nothing else there. Believe me, I was in shock too! But after speaking with my MSC, the camera started having major issues after that. Trying not to remember it. sad smiley
Wow. Now I will never let go of my older rigs! Without HD, I get a ton of time per gb.

Which one did you get tgihvaa?

I'm hoping to get mine next month. I have to keep the cash flow going!!!!!!
lisa,
My non-HD rigs meet and exceed current standards. I get crystal clear video and audio. I'd be surprised if I was forced to upgrade anytime soon. And, I have been using the same 2 rigs for so many years now that they are paid for many, many times over. (Especially the complete rig with extended battery that I bought used, for $200 cash at an IMSC conference four years ago. That shopper had used it twice when a new model was released and she just had to have the very latest thing!. What she then bought turned out to be a very unreliable version, btw.)

I understand your concern, but I will be ready to make the investment if and when I must. Who knows. Another resale may come along by that time.

Not really a concern and I wasn't thinking in terms of being forced into it by a change in industry standards, rather the HD will probably be the only thing available when we reach the point of replacement. My old rig is still my favorite, but the Lite I have as a back up is not and may be replaced by one of the HD cams.

I love the HD. I did some work for a local attorney and was in the courtroom the day they showed the video on a 50" LCD TV. I was amazed at how clear the picture was.

I just got my camera. The buttons were a bad batch-one would not screw in at all and another leave curve shadows due to improper fit.
I have calked and emailed, but so far no replacement buttons. Also, the extra battery would not lock no matter how tightly I hold it down or push with a pen.

cubbiecat,
You should be covered by the 1 year warranty, so hang in there and get a new rig!
