paypal message

Have any of you received emails from paypal wanting your SS# or EIN? When I log on to paypal this is what I read now:

We've asked you several times to provide your tax ID number due to new IRS rules, but we haven't heard from you. Until you provide your tax ID number, you can't receive money or close your account.

So any of you gotten this message?

Also I logged unto this forum and it says I have a private message up at the top and when I click on it it asks me to download some file. Is this something new? I've never seen that before either.

Agree about the spam/scam "personal message."

I haven't seen that message on my PayPal. I have never been asked to give a SS# or EIN although I've had PayPal for many years. There are a lot of PayPal e-mail scams so I agree never to click on a link in a PayPal e-mail or provide info to PayPal by e-mail. If this message is actually on your PayPal account when you log in, you should contact them. They have a number listed where you can phone or you can e-mail them. The only thing I can think is are you possibly exceeding a $500 balance or sending in excess of $500 to a bank account monthly? That would put you in a higher category and require more info. I would contact them immediately and ask for a more detailed explanation.
depending on transaction volume and amounts worstpal is now
required to have that info so they can report your transactions

Regardless of new requirements, isn't it possible if the OP clicked on a fraudulent link in the email they are now unknowingly being redirected to a scam site?

Hover your curser over any link that you are asked to click on before clicking......you'd be surprised what will show as the destination address. It is rarely, if ever, the address that shows in the email.....
I just right clicked your "Toggle User Visibility" because it's a live link, and got this in the properties..

Very easy to know if stuff is legit or not I think. smiling smiley
I have contacted paypal. Also I did some googling and sure enough it shows up. I have had paypal for years also and once upon a time sold a few things here and there on ebay and got paid through paypal. I don't know if that is the issue or what so I am doing further checking. I am so leary of stuff like this that I try to be extremely careful.
Also I did not click on the link in the email. I deleted the emails and only read the subject line without even opening it. I have gotten several of them. Also Canuck I don't know what you mean about what you got when you clicked toggle user visibility. What do you mean by that?
Yep, I have been seeing that notice on one of my PayPal accounts for quite some time now. It's the one I use for eBay, not MSing. I just click on "Update Later" and continue my business. I've tried to update it on their site, but can't figure out how to do it. I spoke to someone at eBay about it once several months ago and they didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Until the day that they stop letting me take my money, I'm not worrying about it. I know the IRS regulations have changed and they need that info if you are a Power Seller or making something like over $20000 (don't quote me on that), but it was a lot, of which category I am not in.

Under your name on the left..see the light blue text? Toggle User Visibility? That's what I clicked.
Glad you didn't touch those links in that email. smiling smiley
So much we have to look out for now, huh? All we want to do is our job!

I somehow inadvertently clicked a paypal scam email once and got weird messages about them closing my account unless I provided info or called them.

The problem was that the telephone number was part of the scam too. It was hell getting this worked out. No matter what I did I was redirected to the fraudulent site. I remember that eventually I had to reestablish a new password for PayPal to get this worked out.

It was an opportunistic scam that had also attached itself to my affiliated bank accounts;waiting for me to make a mistake. So I am always skeptical.

Scammer's monitor our browser history and I think use that info to target people for scams. I believe this is what happened to me when I became a new shopper years ago.

Hope everything works out for you mnarteach
I get similar emails that say my Bank of America or Chase online account has been compromised and that I should click on the link in the email. I don't have an account with either of those banks.

These things worry me because people like my 88 year old mother might reply to them and really get their lives messed up.
One of my more interesting ones was notice I was going to be arrested for an unpaid traffic ticket in New York. Kind of amazing since during trips there I only traveled by things like airport shuttles and cabs and were many years before the alleged ticket. Naturally it could all be cleared up by downloading the attached document which would explain how the ticket could be paid.

Yes I saw that blue toggle link and did click on it but I guess I just don't understand what you mean. I don't know what it does.
If you click on it once you won't see any more posts from that person unless you click another link below each one individually. To remove it and see them all you just click it again.

SCAM - get them all the time and I don't even use paypal. The delete button is your friend.
They are so good that even the email looks legit with the Paypal (or other bank) logo - font type, etc.

General rule:
NEVER click ANY link in ANY email.....can't go wrong that way.
Ha ha - nothing like everyone in your address book getting e-mails about Viagra from you. I never click on any links anymore.
I get the ones from Bank of America and Chase. I also do not have accounts there. I do worry that the elderly or anyone for that matter may fall for this.

200 transactions AND $20,000, so 1 transaction totaling $30k won't trigger it, nor will 300 transactions totaling $19,900.
