Does anyone here actually have an income over $50,000?

I have seen a minimum salary requirement as well as a minimum education requirement. There is at least one steakhouse that requires a college education.

Yes, 50,000 isn't great where I live (Rhode Island). I'm not sure you can make 50k mystery shopping, but I get well over that in my day job - it's enough to live off of, but not living large by any means on that. The mystery shopping is just some extra cash that comes in handy.

Right.
The client knows their demographic. They don't have customers who make $20,000 / year spending $150 routinely for a non-celebratory dinner in a restaurant.
Besides, the shopper is going to be waiting 6-8 weeks for payment. It could be a hardship to wait that long if you are living below the poverty line.

Same here, although I've actually had a need for it to supplement some bill-paying in the past month. Otherwise, I get a thrill knowing that when I spend my mystery-shop earnings to go to the movies or to go out to eat, I'm not taking away from my regular salary (so I'm not taking away from household funds). I'll admit, though, my goal next year is to make my purchase requirement mystery shopping to cover the bulk of, if not all, 2014 Christmas gifts.
