Here's a twist on writing off mileage.....

I'm wondering, as I have started taking the bus to shops - I have cut the distance in which I am willing to travel to shops a bit as I have other projects going too now - and I buy a monthly bus pass to get to shops which in Phoenix, AZ, costs $64/month - is this a write off? Can anyone direct me to where I might find out if indeed it is? I don't use the bus pass strictly for ms but it is how I am getting to all my shops now - if for no other reason, to flatten overhead.

Interesting question, I doubt it's deductible, but in my opinion if buying the bus pass would be cheaper than paying for individual fares for MS alone it should be.

I would probably estimate how much of the bus use is business and how much is other. For example if 80% of my bus trips are for MS then I would claim 80% of the bus ticket. You could keep a written log of the bus trips you do and whether they are for MS or other things.
I think jp is likely right. For many things that you use for a combination of business and personal use, you can deduct at least a portion of the percentage used for business.

Definitely keep a detailed written log or make good notes on your calendar of where you went each time you took the bus, and how much of the trip was for business purposes and how much for personal.

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
If it is a business expense, it is deductible - within certain limits set by the IRS. Check out the IRS website for more details.
