Cancelled Apartment Shop

I recently was assigned an apartment shop with a specific target. After many phone calls, I learned the target no longer works there. I passed this information on to the scheduler and I was advised the shop was cancelled. I asked if I would be compensated for my phone calls and was told no as they wouldn't be billing the client. I contended that I should be as I made the effort to fulfill the shop and it wasn't my fault the target no longer worked there. I'd be interested in other shoppers thoughts and/or experiences in this area.

I never take targeted shops because they are so "iffy" ........ and usually way too much wok for the pay IMHO.
I think in this case the shopper should be paid something but doubt they will be.

Sounds like either the client arranged for a target to be shopped and then did not notify the MSC when employment terminated or the MSC was notified but did not update their job list. In either instance the shopper did what they were supposed to do, when they were supposed to do it and should be compensated something for their time and effort. Good luck with this one, hope you get paid something! smiling smiley
From all the posts I've been reading since last year regarding issues like this, I think the MSC should pay the shopper something. Why is it that WE are the ones to lose out most of the time? The MSC's have more money than we do, for crying out loud!
I agree that some compensation is required.

It's much less stress to decide not to do these shops. Until the MSC's wise up and start paying us for these shops that still require effort, but can't be completed, we should just decide not to do them.

Like some of the others I will not do targeted shops unless they are video shops and I can make an appointment with the target first. Other targeted shops are not for me particularly after reading all the stress caused by them mentioned in this forum. It's easier just to not do them.

I recommend avoiding targeted shops like the plague! Very little good ever seems to come out of them.....
I love doing the apartment shops. The targets are just a challenge, but a pain. And I couldn't begin to count the number of targets that no longer worked there. After several calls I can get a feeling that they no longer work there, its just a sense and I email the MSC, they talk to the client, and often cancel the shop or give another target. I have been fortunate that they started offering a $5.00 fee for my time making the calls. I think very highly of the MSC, and that they have integrity IMHO.
All Ellis shops I see these days seem to be targeted. There used to be a mix of targeted and non-targeted. I have been wodering why they changed, and how it is affecting their business.

I know for me, and for many it seems, they are just a PITA. I have a feeling a lot of these targeted shops just sit on the boards.
Thanks for the input here. I think we all agree that some compensation is due whenever we do any work for the MSC's! Fortunately, these incidents are the exception and not the rule.

I think NumberNineteen "hit the nail on the head" with his thought about the MSC not updating their job lists. I had accepted a second targeted apartment shop from this same MSC when I accepted the first one. It turns out that target didn't work there anymore as well!

Sportsed1, you're right about Ellis' targeted shops sitting on the job board for awhile. But alas, someone always takes them but we never hear the results.
I would ASK if the target can't be reached, if I would be compensated in some way, BEFORE I would agree to do the shopsmiling smiley
SunnyDays2 has a great idea. The next targeted shop I apply for, I will definitely ask about the compensation BEFORE I do it!
Thanks guys, I have a target shop due for Wed. I am going to ask first about being compensated something if they can not be reached. If I can't be compensated, I will have have to cancel.

Either last year or in 2012, I decided to raise my minimum fee for a targeted assignment to $60. Last week, I raised that number to $80, as the targets have become very difficult for me to schedule and conflict with my effort to profit. For someone, though, that has oodles of time AND enjoys the challenge, neither of which apply to me, I understand their reasoning for accepting this work at the offered fee. Just remember the woman who picked up the freezing poisonous snake and warmed him by the fire, only to be bitten, you must know these jobs, in 2014, can be a severe PITA and offer zero compensation if you fail. I had one at $60 removed last week because the scheduler deemed I wasn't making a sufficient number of daily calls, but, that's business.
I have been doing some phone target mortgage shops, and really enjoy it. For the most part most of my targets can be reached within the first couple days, however there have been some that have required a weeks worth of calls, as far as I know the company still compensates if after all the calls there has been no connection as long as good documentation is reported.
How do you raise a fee if you don't mind me asking?

@tktmaster- Your dilemma is my biggest pet peeve with MSC's. As shoppers we are often graded, reports edited and otherwise
dictated to for the slightest of things. Years ago you might well have received partial pay or an apology email
from the Scheduler or MSC. Not so much today. It is becoming more of a one way street.

CureMS has the right idea in emailing the MSC before hand to clarify what happens when you cannot reach the
target and abide by the MSC guidelines. I like the idea of asking straight out whether you will be partially paid
for your time and effort. While it's an extra step it seems to be a necessary one.

In your case and I am sure many others you have helped the MSC do their job by letting them know their information is invalid and allowed them to update their file on this client. The fact that they ultimately will not be paid is
based on the lack of their own due diligence for their client and personally I am tired of taking the hit by not being compensated
or able to "grade" the instructions I was given.

Actually, I think the client has to bear some of the responsibility if employees move/leave in terms of updating the MSC.
