Video shop mishap question

I completed my first video shop with equipment provided by a mystery shopping company. I was then contacted by the company saying that they were not able to retrieve footage from the SD card because the file was corrupted. They offered to pay me a portion of the fees for my efforts since they had nothing to submit to the client. Since it was not my equipment nor SD card, the only checking I did was that the equipment was functional and fully charged, and only assumed that the card was good. My scheduler has been extremely helpful; but despite her efforts, the decision of partial payment stands.

Is this something that others have experienced? Do you think that the partial payment is fair even though there was nothing you could have done better or different to have the shop be successful? Is this something I can argue since it was not my equipment and I completed my part of the contract as required?

I would appreciate input from veterans of video shops out there! Thanks!

Did you test the video camera before using it to ensure that it was recording correctly by playing back the test video?

Yes, but I only did a few seconds of video, enough to ensure the equipment was running.

In their first email to me, they said that they were not able to download all of the video. In subsequent replies, they said that they were not able to use any of the video and cannot submit to the client. I am suspicious by nature, but I am trying to read that as an explanation that if they were only able to see some of the video, then they would not be able to use any of it in submission to the client.
Most of the time the entire video has to be usable. Once in a blue moon having a small amount cut off at the beginning or end will still be accepted. Using my own equipment means no video, no pay, regardless of the reason. For them to basically offer you a trip fee is reasonable. I have a question. Did you ever review the entire video on your computer?

Thanks for your response, LisaSTL. I just wanted to know if others thought the compensation was reasonable. I want to maintain a good relationship whenever possible and do not want to be unreasonable in pursuing this matter further.

No, I did not review the video on my computer. I did not physically handle the SD card at all. Perhaps that's a rookie mistake. However, seeing that it was their equipment and their card, I did not want to be responsible for corrupting the card in any way. Perhaps that is not good reasoning nor a wise move. However, I am not sure that reviewing would have changed the result. One thing I had thought of after the fact is that, in the future, I should download a copy of the file to my computer so that should anything happen between the file leaving my hands and arriving in theirs, I would have a backup.

Absolutely!

As am I. Mostly because I'm fairly certain nobody wants to see mine and would prefer I keep it covered.

I wouldn't go so far as to say nobody.

Always save a copy to your computer. Always review your video ASAP ans notify the MSC if anything is not right. The reason for the higher pay is the higher responsibility, not our talents with the camera, IMHO.

You are very fortunate that they have offered you any compensation at all.

Time to sign up for a video training course, perhaps?

Inexperience was my problem. I have been researching video training courses. Any suggestions for good courses?
Don't let it put you off. Video shopping is a learning curve. As mentioned above, always keep a copy on your computer. I think it's generous for them to give you a partial payment for a video they can't use. On one video shop I must have got grease on the lens from having breakfast and the entire video was just grey shadow. However, the company accepted it because they could still hear the audio. I thought that was incredibly generous.
For sure, do not let this experience deter you from video work. Most video schedulers have done these shops thenselves and made all the mistakes themselves. They will often go to bat for the shopper to try to get at least partial payment. It's a whole different relationshop than the traditional shecheduler-shopper interaction.

About keeping a copy of the video on your own computer: There have been many cases where the uploaded or mailed video was damaged but the shopper's copy was not, so the entire shop could be recovered. In addition, your copy is essential if there are questions about your written report later. I do not delete old video until I have been paid for the assignment.

I think partial is fair. If it had been your own equipment, they probably wouldn't accept it at all. They are at least paying you for the effort. Video schedulers are not like regular schedulers. They are more understanding and have compassion. IMO
When I did my one video shop a couple weeks ago, I also had my audio recorder running in my pocket just in case there was a problem with the video, hoping I might get a partial at least.

Time to build a bigger bridge.
Check with the company before audio recording while video recording. If they are not going to accept audio only it is not worth doing. While a DVR may not cause an issue, other electronics have been known to cause interference with the sound. That's why it is a good idea to leave your phone in the car or have it completely turned off.

That's great information to know, thanks!

Thanks for the tip. I was warned before an audio shop I just did yesterday to be sure my cell phone was turned completely off, not just on vibrate, because some of them also interfere with recordings.

Thanks for all the encouragement! I will definitely be more proactive in making sure everything is in working order and in keeping files from this point on. I actually already did a second shop before I had this one rejected and it's still in review. Fingers crossed on that one since I did exactly the same as I did on the first one.

Even with only these two video shops, and one being unsuccessful, I am looking to do more of these. I agree that the scheduler is much more involved and much nicer!

Moving forward!
