I don't know about Minnesota but check out A Closer Look and Intelli-Shop. They have some that are more of "the normal basic hotels." Do those for practice so you won't have so much money tied up. Then you can go up to the higher class ones.

Be sure to check Trip Adviser, etc. to know what you are getting into. Some of them are on the boards for a reason such as they need to know what is wrong. Remember that most hotel shops have a few required pictures then pictures of anything else that is wrong. If there is a lot wrong, then there is more work involved. The bonus should be higher to make up for it. Also, check to be sure that there is good security before signing up as it is not worth a bonus if you end up in a crime-ridden location and get shot.

lbw, the Trip-advisor advice was great! A now-defunct MSP, towards the end, only scheduled nasty hotels and motels. I'm not talking, OMG-the-drapes-don't-match-the-shower-curtains complaints. I'm talking bugs, bloodstained sheets, mould, and cigarette butts in the swimming pool. That MSP offered usually about $20 and to reimburse cost of the room, which would have been a great deal if you were staying somewhere clean with a decent breakfast during your travels.
Thanks heartlandcanuck, I remember just a few months ago, there was one on the boards that had a $20 bonus on it. I was not planning on staying there but just for a joke, I went to tripadvisor just to see what it was like. It was in the worst part of Indianapolis (that is why wasn't planning on staying in the first place). That area is full of gangs, drug activity of the worst kind, etc. but also the whole property was reviewed as having bed bugs. When I say the whole property, bed bugs were listed in every review. The place had changed names three times in the last two years and each name of the place on the reviews had bed bugs listed in capital letters. It made me wonder who they finally got to go.
