department store shop where you purchase expensive item and mail it back

Lately I have seen shops where you go to a particular department store (my favorite one) and observe this display of some expensive item (don't know if its jewelry or makeup, not familiar with the product name). You get reimbursed for the purchase price (around 75 or 100 I think) But then, get this: You have tomail it back to them and you only get reimbursed regular 1st class postage - you're not supposed to mail it registered /insured. I would be so worried about it getting lost or stolen and being out the money! Has anyone done this shop?

I'd be worried about that too I wouldn't sign up for the job. If the "mail back" info is in the guidelines and not accessible until the shop is assigned, I would probably politely tell the MSC why the conditions outlined in the guidelines are unacceptable to me and are the reason I cannot commit to doing the shop.

First class postage already carries insurance. It's low, I think around $50...but maybe they didn't think it worth it.

I've recently started doing product pickups. Different than yours entirely though. I picked up expired OTC medications, makeup, and perfume/colognes at CVS and mailed it in. They specifically required that insurance be added.

To a great extent it depends on my existing relationship with a company whether or not I will accept such a job from them. If I have ever sensed distrust on their part or had any concerns on my part, I won't do it. There are a few companies I would do such a job for with absolutely no hesitation because I have always felt like I was treated as a team member rather than a peon.

I don't distrust the company. I distrust the post office, especially the providence branch

Priority Mail comes with insurance and tracking. First Class Mail is only for packages or envelopes of 12 ounces or less and does not come with insurance or tracking although you can pay to add either or both. There is also Standard Mail which used to be called Parcel Post, and it not not come with insurance or tracking either unless you choose to add it.

I knew that all the information I gained from doing Scenario A, B, and C would come in useful!

Adding insurance to First Class mail costs $2.10 and adding tracking costs another $1.05

What about shipping it Priority mail while doing a USPS shop?

Happily shopping Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut

Now that's a great idea! kill 2 birds with one stone lol! (would have to coordinate well, you must mail back the same day you shop )

myst4au - are you allowed to ship it priority, or, or you have to ship it regular mail?

ebit123 - The USPS mystery shop absolutely, positively requires Priorty Mail (and not Priorty Mail Express) for all scenarios. BTW, there is no such thing as "regular mail".

No I'm talking about the shop for the vendor at the department store that requires you to mail them the item purchased...can you send it priority mail or what I call regular mail (aka 1st class)
