a typical car shopper

So I did a new car shop over the winter...I don't remember the details exactly...but it was something like required to spend at least 20 minutes OUTSIDE browsing the lot...it actually stated because that is what a normal shopper would do....it happened to be an excessively cold stretch...temps in the teens ...even below 0 with the windchill.....REALLY..normal car shoppers will browse outside in that weather?

I would say it would be odd for most regular customers to stand out in the bone-chilling cold, searching for a new car. brrrr......!!

Now, if there was a good sale...smiling smiley
If I really wanted a new car, I would. I'd just bundle up.

Then I'd have the salesman show me those nice heated seats and dual climate control.

GMNJ, you are right, no normal shopper would spend 20 minutes outside in those conditions. You might as well go inside and announce, "In case you think I'm nuts, ladies and gentlemen, I'm not; I'm a mystery shopper and am proud to say, I am following all of the guidelines." grinning smiley

I do remember on most of them you have to browse the lot a minimal length of time. If it's freezing or windy and freezing, there is no way a real customer would browse the lot for five minutes or ten minutes or whatever.

I have done car shops where I was supposed to browse outside for 20 minutes to see if someone came out to help me. If no one appeared, then after 20 minutes I could go inside and hopefully be greeted there. I was sometimes outside for the full 20 minutes (but not in freezing cold) because everyone was busy / on break / not paying attention / ??

If you were outside the dealership for 20 minutes then most likely whoever was up in rotation didn't think you were a serious buyer for some reason and was hoping someone they felt more likely to purchase a car would come up before they absolutely had to take you.

Whatever the reason, I reported it the way it happened. In other cases, someone came out in under 5 minutes, sometimes almost immediately.

I have done multiple car shops, so far I have only had to stand outside for five minutes. Perhaps I have been lucky.
But twenty minutes in the freezing cold.........I hope I never get one like that.
Never done them and in the winter but the only time I've done a car shop where I've been outside is purely only for a test drive and never for 20 minutes.

Those guidelines are written to be used across the country and sometimes across the globe. With something out of the ordinary it is time to contact the scheduler. If the weather was a temporary cold snap they might be willing to reschedule. I've had car shops scheduled on days where it is pouring down rain and generally the schedulers agree the inclement weather would put the associate at a disadvantage and we don't want that if at all possible.

On my first car shop the salesman told me that the trunk of an Altima was large enough for two bodies if they were cut in half. Almost told him that he failed the shop, but I really wanted that double fee so I hung in there a little longer. Turned out that he was an ex-cop and he worked on a case like that as his last case. So I overlooked it.
