I didn't know either until a few years ago when I called the IRS because I hadn't received a 1099 and couldn't get ahold of the company. They let me know what that company had reported for me and also told me what other 1099s they had on file for me.
Also, my sister told me she had to call the IRS last week for something and was on hold for well over an hour before getting to speak to someone.
