My grandpa always called it Dog Dirt.

I would have said "A brown substance was on the walkway, so I pulled out my trusty microscrope, got down on all fours, and examined the substance. After a thorough investigation, I determined that the brown, matted, and smelly substance, was poop from an animal species. I cannot identify the exact species, however, based on the specific nature of the smell of the substance, I suspect that the subscance was left on the sidewalk by a three year old, golden brown, male, cocker spaniel."

Dog feces

Wildlife biologists deal with this all the time identifying what kind of animal left poop. "Scat" is a perfect term. After all, you cannot easily distinguish dog poop from certain other animal's poop, such as fox or coyote or raccoon (which will raid garbage bins at night) or ... but you get the drift. Of course, you may run across and editor who does not recognize the term and thus jeopardize your rating...... :-)

P.S. Even black bear poop can look like a large dog's leavings.
