Taxes

Hi all,
Have been wondering about what I should call myself. I want to do my taxes using H&R, and they will probably ask what my occupation/profession is. I cannot say that I am a mystery shopper?! Anybuddy has any idea.

Say you are a "Market Researcher,", as you ike it, and jun52aid, as a self-employed contractor, you are responsible for paying your own SS#. You need to be making quarterly paymets to the IRS for this. Otherwise, you will incur big fines come tax time.
In Canada I'm required to identify myself as an Independent Contract Worker. Self-employment allows you to claim any valid expense needed to operate your business. These may include any at-home business expenses (such as telephone, internet, and other utilities), business use of vehicle costs, meals, purchase of equipment, and even entertainment, in accordance with the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) guidelines.
Julialuvsmovies. Thanks,

Do we pay social security on total amount paid or the actual income earned after subtracting mileage and other expenses? Is there a way to figure this out easily on a website/link or I would have to contact a tax consultant for this? Thanks,
jun,
The tax forms or Turbo Tax will walk you through the computation of self-emplyment tax. It is paid on net earnings (after allowed expenses) but, as self-employed folks, we basically pay both the empolyee and the employer share.

Does turbotax let you do this every 3 months? or only at the end of the year? Thanks,

What are My Self-Employed Tax Obligations?
As a self-employed individual, generally you are required to file an annual return and pay estimated tax quarterly.
Self-employed individuals generally must pay self-employment tax (SE tax) as well as income tax. SE tax is a Social Security and Medicare tax primarily for individuals who work for themselves. It is similar to the Social Security and Medicare taxes withheld from the pay of most wage earners. In general, anytime the wording "self-employment tax" is used, it only refers to Social Security and Medicare taxes and not any other tax (like income tax).
Before you can determine if you are subject to self-employment tax and income tax, you must figure your net profit or net loss from your business. You do this by subtracting your business expenses from your business income. If your expenses are less than your income, the difference is net profit and becomes part of your income on page 1 of Form 1040. If your expenses are more than your income, the difference is a net loss
