Paypal

Rookie mistake.

Do most companies allow you to use paypal?

Glaring ICA violation.

Hi Mary,
What bgriffin is saying is that you are violating one of the few rules of the forum.....don't link the MSC with the client. This is most likely a violation of the ICA agreement you have with the MSC also. You can edit your post
most companies i work for do direct deposit...i don't remember if they also do paypal..

there are some that only do paypal..

and at least 1 that still sends a paper check!
Although some send paper checks, most now use either PayPal or direct deposit. Be careful signing up, because some charge a fee for depositing to PayPal. The companies do tell you when you sign up, but you must read it. We frequently get outraged posts from new shoppers who tell us "they charged me a fee when they made my PayPal deposit!" And, of course, the answer is that they were very clear about the fee up front, so this should not have been a surprise to you.

A few companies, Stericycle for example, offer PayPal and direct deposit. Direct deposit is free. If you prefer Paypal, they pass on the 3% fee to you.
I have never been charged a fee for using Paypal in the past 10+ years. Are you sure you are not talking about PayQuicker? They are notorious for charging fees.
PayPal charges a 3% fee. Most mystery shopping companies pay the fee. Some mystery shopping companies pass the fee on to the mystery shopper. Corporate Research International, does this. In your Profile, under Payment Options, it gives a choice between direct deposit and PayPal. If you choose direct deposit as your payment, it is free. If you choose PayPal, the company subtracts 3%, up to a maximum of $1.50, from the payment they send you.

Second to None does this also. If you pick direct deposit from STN, it is free. If you choose PayPal, $1 gets deducted from the payment they send you. STN calls it a processing fee.
I guess all my companies either offer DD and PayPal (so of course I am using DD), eat the PayPal fee (so I have never been made aware of it) or I don't work for the MSCs who operate this way. Isn't Stericycle and CORI basically the same company? And don't they pay only $5.00 or some ridiculous shopper fee for gas stations?
Sorry, yes, Stericycle is CORI. I've just been shopping them so long they are still CORI to me. Stericycle, when they were CORI, used to pay low, low fees at the beginning of a month, like a $4 fee + $1 reimbursement at a hardware store. Then the fees got higher until they were $20, $25, $30 plus the reimbursement. So if you held out and somebody didn't snatch them for $4, you could make some good fees with CORI. The hardware store went to Maritz, which now pays $10 or $11, with a $1 reimbursement. I made lots of money with CORI before they went to Stericycle and almost all their clients went to other companies. Now they have few clients, at least not ones I like, and their fees don't go up all month like they used to.

I like PayPal better but I definitely use direct deposit with both STN and Stericycle because I am not willing to pay a fee. I don't hold it against the companies who charge the fees for using PayPal as long as they provide a free option and they tell you about it up front. Then, if I still choose PayPal instead of direct deposit, knowing there is a fee, it's my choice. And if I don't read what's available to me before I make my choice, then it's my bad.
It's a processing fee. Whenever it's a payment for goods or service vs family and friends, someone gets dinged 2.9% + 30 cents. Generally it's the merchant or in this case the MSC as they are paying you for services rendered.
In my opinion, it would be tax deductible. But a tax deduction is only worth your marginal tax rate. So, a deduction of $1 is worth $0.25 if you are in the 25% marginal tax bracket. Still, 25% is better than 0%, so if you are being charged PayPal fees or bank fees or parking meter fees or anything else which is not deductible, keep track of them.

the MSC are not the one charging the fee for paypal...paypal is charging the fee..
In my experience, the majority of companies use PayPal. But yes, some are direct deposit or check. Personally, I'd love to have direct deposit only (or to have an electronic option for the companies that send checks). The checks wind up gaining dust in my mailbox, since I'm so rarely home.

So far this year, this is my tally for payment types. First, the number of companies using each type and then the total number of shops:
Check = 10 (92 shops)
Paypal = 21 (188 shops)
Direct Deposit = 7 (138 shops)
203 shops are awaiting payment

Newbie here. Reading this brings to mind: with direct deposits and PayPal links setup, how much do you guys usually leave in the account that receives the monies? (I'm pretty risk-adverse). Is the account just for MS work? Thanks.

Mags438 - Your bank account which receives direct deposits is FDIC insured. What are you worried about? Some people have two or more bank accounts. I do. It helps with bank teller shops. Do you remove the money from your "primary" account because you are risk averse? If you don't use your PayPal account to pay for online purchases, you might want to move money PayPal to your bank weekly or monthly. PayPal is not FDIC insured. Hope that helps.

I have a debit card for my PayPal account because I used to be a power seller on eBay. I'm able to use my PayPal deposits to pay for expenses for other shops and for gasoline. I occasionally purchase things on eBay with those funds. I can also pay bills with it or purchase things online with the card. It seldom gets transferred to the bank account because I don't have to wait several business days to use it because of the debit card.

Risk-conscious prolly a better term than risk-adverse...worked many years in mega-corp doing risk management. Many years ago, an incorrect direct deposit amount froze my entire account during a long holiday weekend. Logically, they should have just frozen the incorrect amount, not my entire account.

I just wanted to know how MS'ers handled their MS-related accounts. Thanks for the feedback. I think I'm going with a separate savings account with the bank's minimum requirement deposit.
