Recognizing Scams and how to Avoid them

Hello to everyone! New shoppers often come on this forum and ask "is this a scam?" The experienced shoppers on here do a great job of helping them out. Unfortunately more and more scam artists are using real company names like ours and many other Mystery Shopping Companies to help shield the fact that they are scam artists. One of our employees, Steven Cooley, wrote a fantastic blog article this week discussing various scam tactics, how to notice them, and most importantly how to avoid them.

I wanted to post it on the forum for everyone to read. He does a great job of breaking down many different avenues scam artists take to try and not only scam shoppers, but unfortunately they slander the names of good companies as well. I hope you take time to read this blog, leave a comment at the bottom, and feel free to offer the blog up to anyone who asks about scams in the future. Customer Impact employees share a blog a week, so if you enjoy this one, there may be a blog on other topics related to mystery shopping you might enjoy as well!

Hopefully this blog, along with the awareness and care that many of you take in helping those who might not be as conscious of scams, continue to help harness this unfortunate issue. Keep fighting the good fight!

What if some company says I can take my high school educated ass out to a $200.00 dinner on a Tuesday night about once a month and get all the money back six weeks or so later. That's got to be scam, right?

Well Michael, I guess that would depend on if you can write the report like your high school eduction has allowed you to do. smiling smiley

But putting aside sarcasm, this is a candidate for a sticky.

Mr. Price, it's nice to see someone being proactive in helping shoppers avoid crime. Thank you. Your care and concern is appreciated.

There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data.
Thanks LJ. Anything we can do, or if any shoppers have any questions we encourage you to reach out to us. Many shoppers have wisely called our offices prior to doing anything with these recent scams that involve checks being sent to their homes.
@dprice: Kudos to you for posting this and a standing ovation to your teammate, Steven Cooley, for writing such a comprehensive description of typical scam behaviors and tactics! It is a very valuable resource for not only new shoppers, but for the general public as well. Excellent!!

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.
