Question about Transaction Numbers on Purchase and Return Receipts

Does anybody know whether or not purchase & return transaction numbers are supposed to match? I've only recently started doing return shops for which I had to enter both numbers manually, and I have noticed some inconsistency between different locations.

From memory, that transaction numbers were unique in my purchase / return receipts I'd input.

I'd say this would make sense as a purchase and a return are unique transactions and should be identified as such, even if the transaction contains the 'same' items in it.

They should be different numbers. The transaction number (at least a Sears, Meijer, and Famous Footwear for sure) is a sequential number. Each new transaction has the next number, and it is a way for loss prevention people (and plenty of others at stores, but I worked LP for years) to track transactions down.
That's what I thought. Maybe something weird's going on with the registers in some of the locations where I shopped. :/
OceanGirl - often times stores will have the old transaction number listed as a reference on the return receipt. Maybe that is what you are seeing?
I am pretty sure I have never encountered the same transaction # on purchase and return. Maybe yours was a special case. Check with your scheduler.
If you are talking about the fabric store, I think they are two separate numbers but I could be wrong...I have not done those in 2 years...
