I too am looking for a scanner to take with me on jobs. The web site looked great. Thanks for posting.
I've been looking at similar items too but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I wish someone would come up with one the size of this Doxie with a little window on the top to see the quality of the scan without having to wait until you get the file on a computer to look at it.

ETA: Oooh - maybe one you link to your cell phone that displays the page as it's scanning so you can see the quality, but doesn't actually save it to your cell phone. You know, that just uses it as a monitor to check status. Let's invent one!

Hey, that is exactly what I need. Thanks Sybil and LJ. Let me know if you have invented one, LJ. winking smiley
Hmmm, I'm looking through reviews, but it appears you're forced to used their software to read the raw files exported from the device to the SD card. Anyone who used this device, do you know what file type is exported? I'd definitely go for this IF it exports to a native JPEG, PNG or some sort of image file, rather than being forced to install a software on every computer I was to extract scanned files from....

I think the Doxie unit itself saves as a jpeg but it said in the PCMag review that the software allows you to save in several other formats.

That's what I want to know. I want to be able to eject the SD card, plug it into my laptop, then drag and drop the pics into a folder and do what I want with them, at that point.

Three years ago I bought what was then the latest version of the VuPoint Magic Wand portable scanner. At the time it was a special on one of the home shopping channels, but you can find these scanners on sale all over.

I love it! You can do jpg, pdf, color, black and white, adjust the dpi. Upload to you computer via wifi or usb.

This scanner has given me high quality images and is really easy to use. All you do is pass it over the document you want to scan, so you can easily do business cards, receipts, brochures, photos, etc. I think the newer version has a preview screen (mine doesn't). VuPoint makes a variety of portable scanners, so if you go to their site, you'll see some scanners that require you to feed the document. The WAND doesn't, that's one reason why it's great.

For our purposes as mystery shoppers, it's not a bad solution especially if you're able to grab at a clearance price, but we've also learned that even a picture from our cameras / phones typically are equally acceptable "scanning" methods in this industry.

For actual photo scans of old family pictures? Definitely not the device I'd turn to.
The flaw of the wand is the uniformity of the actual scan and scan quality. You're relying on the device to "correct" the a cross-section of the scan where the "scanner" titled the wand unintentionally.

I wasn't thinking about old family photos, which was your main point. Brain freeze!

Mystery shopping and making copies of documents that don't need to be really outstanding is what I mainly use the wand for, so maybe some forum members might find it useful if they don't like using their phones.

When I want really high quality scans I use the flatbed scanner at my public library. It's free, fast, and really top-notch. Have scanned a lot of old photos this way, and they have an attachment that enabled me to scan my slides too.

Hope your scanner works out and that you're able to create some great albums!
I use a VuPoint Solutions wand scanner. It saves the image to a microchip and runs on AA batteries. $39 Black Friday sale at Best Buy. Staples sells a version for around $50.
