Edited to add: I believe in most states it is illegal for an EMPLOYER to have an EMPLOYEE pay workmen's comp so I strongly suspect you are being charged for something else and need to have it clarified exactly what is being withheld and why.
Agreed. If it's really worker's comp, it is illegal, no matter what the job is. (You could have your own, as an employee of yourself, in your own company, but them charging you for it cannot substitute for this.)
And they're treating you like an employee, not an independent contractor.
