Worker's Comp Deductions

I have 4% workers comp insurance deducted from my paychecks. I understand this is automatic if I don't carry my own. Is this normal. Only one company that I do independent contractor work for does this. I do have my own medical insurance.

That's interesting, because workmen's comp is for EMPLOYEES. I wouldn't work as an independent contractor for a company that deducted for workmen's comp.
Is that perhaps for merchandising rather than mystery shopping? I understand the relationships for merchandising are frequently employee ones.

Edited to add: I believe in most states it is illegal for an EMPLOYER to have an EMPLOYEE pay workmen's comp so I strongly suspect you are being charged for something else and need to have it clarified exactly what is being withheld and why.

Agreed. If it's really worker's comp, it is illegal, no matter what the job is. (You could have your own, as an employee of yourself, in your own company, but them charging you for it cannot substitute for this.)

And they're treating you like an employee, not an independent contractor.

A Google search under workers compensation and the name of your state should provide some details specific to your location.
Actually, when I did demos (as an employee) they deducted for workers compensation and as an employee for a few merch companies, but never for mystery shopping. It sounds like the workers compensation is to protect them, not you. I have no idea why they would be taking that out of your check if you are an independent contractor. Check you paycheck stub and see what it says for FICA, Fed Withholding to see what else they may be taking, because that makes you an employee smiling smiley
