Do you report findings to the manager if it is a major health issue?

I found in the lemon box at 5 guys a lemon slice that had a good chunk of a fingertip and blood on the lemons. I told one of the crew members as I feel that this is a health issue.

fingertip? I find that hard to believe, the person would have had to go to the local trauma center with the piece of the finger...

I've never done it on a mystery shop..but have as a regular customer...and the problem was never corrected...so i contact the health department directly.

I am not saying his whole finger got chopped off. It was large enough to know it was skin and blood.

Did you take a picture of it? It is hard to report it to the DOH if you don't have proof. Your word may be enough but a picture is worth a million words.

BTW, what did the manager do? if I was missing a finger tip, I would know enough to discard what ever I was "cutting" up, instead of leaving it out to be served to the public. angry smileyangry smiley

Was this a shop? I would of notified the manger and reschedule the shop. As to not come out of cover.

Believe it or not, I have heard of this happening before. Here is a link to some cases reported by NPR a few years ago: [www.npr.org] I have also recently heard of an incident at an Applebees.

I would totally report this to the manager, if not the health department as well. Back when we did the McDonald's shops, the instructions required us to notify the manager if chicken was undercooked, due to the health consequences.

Now just flake on the shop and sue the pants off 5 guys for your emotional distress of finding the blood covered lemons and finger flesh!

Could I have a receipt please?
I had the misfortune to accidentally slice my finger once while working at a restaurant. A manager quickly assisted me with my injury, a coworker drove me to the hospital. If for some reason some of my skin and blood ended up not being properly disposed of, it wasn't due to the manager's lack of attending to the most important issue at hand.

That being said, this shops allows us to be normal and report any issues we encounter. Even if it didn't, it is common sense to bring something like this to an employees immediate attention so I am glad that you did.

I absolutely would bring it to the manager's attention. You don't have to reveal yourself as a shopper when you do. If I am shopping a restaurant and find blood in my food, I'll complain just like any normal customer. I'll then put it in my report. The beauty of it is, as a shopper, you know your complaint will go above the store's management.

I was shopping a bar last week and the beer tap was not working correctly - causing the beer to come out as 90% foam and wasting about 1/2 what was poured. Overhearing the bartenders voice their frustration, I learned that the problem had been going on for two months and that they had voiced concern about the amount of waste on a couple of occasions, but were blown off. I have a hunch that the problem will be fixed by next week after I reported it, in detail. It's not as serious as a health violation, but should get the company's attention just the same.

I once notified someone about a blocked fire exit.

What am I missing here?
Of course I'd tell the manager. I don't see how doing so would compromise a shop either....unless they comp your meal or something for bringing it t their attention.
It' not like you're going to the manager and saying "Hi I'm a mystery shopper, and there's a severed finger in you lemon box."
And with 5guys, the shop has so many spots for narrative, you can mention the incident and describe how the employees reacted as well.
Even though many shops give us ridiculous guidelines that often make it difficult to be any other shopper, you want to be any other shopper on a shop, so do what you would normally do in that situation.
I was doing a restaurant shop for ACL. It was a takeout lunch shop. When I got home and ate part of my sandwich, I noticed the chicken had a weird texture. I looked closer and saw it was RAW inside. I was disgusted. I called the store manager because it was a health issue( in my opinion) and was refunded right away. Needless to say, I still wrote up the shop as I signed up to do. I was pretty upset about the whole thing. I did have stomach issues the next day and had to "work" for an hour plus for zero money.
My son got food poisoning from a badly undercooked burger at a nice sit-down restaurant. I checked with the mystery shopping company manager, and she said to absolutely call and let the manager know.
