Has anyone ever had a "client" cancel a shop program after you have already completed it for the MSC?
No, that blows. I am so sorry that happened to you. What recourse are you going to attempt? You should get paid regardless if the shop was completed and reported.

That is what I am thinking. I have sent an email to the scheduler and cc'd a couple of other ones there. I feel that is on the client to pay for completed shops, and not cancel after submission. This does not make sense...
I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I expected the MSC to "step up to the plate" and pay me and then battle it out with their client. Didn't happen. Not a dime. I never applied for another shop with that MSC. Lesson learned!
Was anything in writing stating the client had the right to cancel at any time and the contractor would have no recourse? Accepting the shop was entering into a contract. Completing it correctly and submitting it on time were fulfilling the contract. Be sure you mention the phrases "legal contract" and "contractual law" as many times as possible while fighting for payment. If the MSC decides to be hardheaded, call them out here so the rest of us know.

The timing of your note makes me wonder if you are referring to one that happened with on of my shops today. The shop: Open a savings account and keep it open for three months (paying fees as needed). At the end of the three months, fill out a survey regarding whether or not the bank upheld its agreement regarding marketing and privacy.
I kept my account for the three full months and, just a few days after the deadline, got a note from the MSP stating that the rest of the shop was cancelled. So... I kept the account as required, but never filled out the second report.

The MSC needs to pony up here. You completed your contract with them in a timely fashion. What the client does or does not do is not your issue. Your contract was with the MSC, not the client.

Ah Ha, I just received the same email concerning the banking project. They are offering $25 instead of $125 for completing part II, which I already did . The second report was absolutely nothing, really. It was just confirmation that the account was kept open for 3 months. But, I think it's underhanded, to say the least, to pull the fee after shop completion. I've written an email expressing my feelings and expectations of full fee plus an explanation. What recourse is there besides this? I'm surprised at this company. They have always been upstanding, IMHO.

This has happened to me a couple of times over the past 20 years. All MSP companies concerned are no longer in business. At the time, they were considered "upstanding," but stiffing contractors is underhanded.
I had performed the work in good faith, but went unpaid due to clients dropping their projects. Sorry this happened to you, but this is one of the hazards of this kind of work, and one reason I am very selective about the assignments I take on.
Small consolation --- you can declare it as a loss on your tax return.

I am sorry to hear this and wish you all the best of luck. Since there seem to be quite a few involved maybe you can all get together to push for payment. I had this happen just once to me but I did the job on the first day it was available. The whole project was cancelled around day two but I still got paid my full fee (which was much less than $125).

I got the same email today. I completed the second portion of the shop last week. If the client cancelled the project, we should have been informed prior to completing the second portion.
Just as they say we must follow all guidelines (the contract) in order to be paid, they need to hold up their portion of the contract and pay what it says.
I just read over the guidelines and it does specifically say they will pay $125 when you open the account, and another $125 after you have kept the account open for 90 days and fill out the follow up report. It is up to the MSC to hold up that part of the contract.
Who hold the MSC's accountable? Can this be reported to someone like the BBB or other business monitoring company?

I did complete the second part of the survey, and was notified a week later that the client "cancelled this program and these shops can no longer be used. We will not be able to pay you in full for the follow-up portion of this shop. We will pay you $25 for your efforts."

In doing some additional research online, I found that someone suggested going to the Department of Labor to resolve the issue. I just responded to the email using the terms suggested in one of the above posts. If I do not get anywhere with that, my next step will be the Dept. of Labor.

As long as the name of the MSC's client has not been revealed, you certainly can mention the company's name on the forum. You can either disclose the name of the client OR you can tell the name of the MSC. Not both. I would certainly appreciate knowing the name of the MSC. I think the MSC needs to step and pay up.

Any grievance must be filed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as per the company IC agreement
I followed up with the MSC several times to be sent the second part of the survey. They finally did and I completed that. So I finished the shop in it's entirety and still received the same email.

I forgot that ATH has done this to me too! It was years ago, but I was definitely stiffed. I followed all directions carefully and completely but still was denied payment. Proceed with caution when accepting any shops from them. They usually pay but sometimes the shopper gets left holding the bag ... and it is stone empty!

I did the same shop. I received the e-mail last night saying that the second portion was reduced down to $25 three weeks after completing it. I e-mailed back an "unethical" note to the sender requesting a review at a higher level. I plan on calling today.

Hey Rachey, I am sorry to say that I am doubtful you will get anywhere with the Department of Labor, since you are an IC and not an employee. I tried contacting the DOL in Utah several years back when I got stiffed by Franchise Compliance for a carpet cleaning job. I was out over $200 reimbursement plus my shop fee. They basically said because I was not an employee of FC they could not help me.

Thank you for identifying the company. Ath is on my 10 foot pole now. Please let us know if something changes and Ath decides to do the right thing.
I would like to add that these same shops are still on the job board here in NJ and only paying $100 now. So, it doesn't look to me like the client cancelled the project.
Edited to add: The posted shops are not for the "Opt-out" scenario, but still same bank and same account opening...Just not right..I would caution anyone from performing these shops. Makes me dislike this bank even more than I previously did. I know I should be angry with the MSC, but hold off until I get a response from them..so far, nothing, nada
