Skimmers at gas stations

I just saw an article about skimmers on two of my regular gas route pumps. I use almost exclusively gas gift cards for my evals so I'm not that concerned but it makes me wonder why the MSCs/clients haven't started training us in skimmer detection and made it part of our eval yet...

Have you ever heard the saying " Be careful what you wish for "?

They caught 2 of the guys with the skimmers in a suburb of Milwaukee about 2 weeks ago. They were from Florida.
Oh I'm not wishing. I'm just surprised they haven't piled that on yet.

That might be a duty of the employee, to check for skimmers.

Why?

1) Many shoppers can't even follow the current guidelines regarding simple marketing materials. You really expect them to get involved with skimmer detection?

2) Skimming in a crime. I am not sure if it is considered a theft, robbery or identity theft but the "typical" mystery shopper is not qualified to deal with potential police issues.

You mean much more than $5 per shop....

As shoppers, we typically look for those seal stickers as an indicator and anything else that may be of value to the station. Otherwise, detection of skimmers is waaaaaayyy above our pay grade and beyond our typical scope as shoppers.

I'd be glad to be trained as a consultant specializing in this kind of work though. Sounds like a fun technician / inspector job!

And watch for skimming devices on supermarket self checkouts as per an internal memo from Stop & Shop. It probably is already occurring elsewhere with these self check out machines. Play it safe !!! Pay Cash !!!

If you pay with credit card, you're typically not liable for any unauthorized charges given it's reported within the generous time window.

That's true, Tarantado, but the whole reporting, tracking and recovery thing is still a pain in the butt.
No Tarantado, I would be a skimmer monitor for an additional $5.00 per shop. I would be happy to take a picture of a suspicious looking credit card receptacle and let the client take it from there. You know, kind of like the dentist who tells the guy in the chair that he has a bad cavity but he is not really a dentist, just a monitor.

I pay with a credit card that earns cash back rewards. Extra bonus for me.

Fraudulent charges on debit cards are fully refunded if reported in 60 days. That's safe!

Yeah, the risk is how long until the charges are reverse since the debit card's directly linked to your checking account. At least with a credit card, it doesn't touch your actual money at all.

Where/when do you get your gift cards? Do you buy them on shops and use at the next one?

Shopping & Auditing Western Colorado, North Denver, the Central Rockies ~~~ and all stops leading to Aspen & Vail.
Yes

The fraudulent charges have to be credited back to the debit card account immediately.

They are available at $25, $50, & $100. Some, but not all, gas stations have them. Best Buy as well and on line

Not necessarily true. Money lost from your checking account due to fraudulent charges isn't always immediately credited back and may sometimes require an investigation first.

Instead of this Debit Debate, why don't people just talk to their banking institution and get the facts that are relevant to them? Every bank and even some accounts have different rules. There are some forum members who have a track record of posting inaccurate information. Do you really want to take a chance with your financial matters by taking "advice" from a fictitious name on a public forum? Use some common sense, people.

Please ignore, I'm in the wrong thread.

It's true. It's a federal regulation.

Charges under $750 have to be credited right away. Over $750, require an investigation.
