Field Agent Beer Pricing Audits make me uncomfortable

The beer pricing audits where I have to ask the price of 12 oz, 16 oz, and bottle of craft beer, domestic, import , and some other types make me uncomfortable. There are 100s of these audits near me though. I don't see how I can be discreet and ask all these questions no one asks at the bar. I wish I could just say I am working for a market research company. Any thoughts on this?

My boss sent me to check on this - might have a Friday get together after work and he wants to set parameters for what we can order etc. He is so cheap yet likes his craft and import beers - sorry for all the questions, thanks.

I don't know how to ask it either without a back story.

Here in NJ, with everything in liquor stores and not in a supermarket or drug store, it's very very difficult to be discreet. Liquor stores have plenty of staff and keep a keen eye on everyone in the store. I did two similar assignments on EasyShift. At one, I was accosted by a guy making a delivery to the store who demanded to know why I was taking pictures. At the other, they told me to leave because I was not allowed to take pictures. I will not be doing any more liquor stores.
I am familiar with this and am uncomfortable as well. They are up to $11 now so i emailed field agent just yesterday asking how do we get the prices when they are not on the menu. Well i know we are to ask the bartender BUT what do we say when they ask why we are asking for so many prices? Here is their reply:

Thanks for writing in. You can ask the bartender, but keep in mind these jobs are to be completed discreetly. Be sure to follow the alternate photo instructions where applicable! Good luck!

Well, that didn't help me so i will just ignore the 20 jobs i see posted daily.
I have just been saying I work for a survey company and I have 5 questions for you. Works like a charm. Everyone has been helpful. I had one bartender who declined. Also, I always shut the volume off the phone so camera doesn't make snapping sound.
One day last week when I was home putzing around I saw the shops were up to $20. So I decided to make a list and head out and do some of these. (There was about 20 within a few miles from me). My first stop was at a neighborhood bar. I walked in at 2pm and was surprised to see the small bar with almost all seats taken around the bar. EVERYBODY looked at me when I came in. Given my past experience and what karenica said she does, I first asked if they had a beer list. The bartender was confused with my question (dive bars don't generally have them but hey, doesn't hurt to ask). She chuckled and said no so I asked if I could ask her a few questions regarding beer prices for a survey. She started to answer but then someone seated at the bar, apparently, told her she should not do it. Well crap. So I left....with all 50 eyes on me as I walked out. I didn't get paid since I did not get a photo of the bar inside. Actually, I am not sure if they pay when bartenders refuse. I sent Field Agent a note stating why I could not complete it and they replied mentioning how we should be just acting as a normal customer, blend in and ask about prices. Well, that is a challenge for more reasons than I care to state but lets just say, no more! It is just not worth the effort. Bummer....I was excited about $20 x up to 16 shops! $320 had me motivated, but not enough, apparently. I'm sure some people would have no problem just going into the next place and trying again but it just makes me uncomfortable. So uncomfortable I didn't try the bar directly next door. lol
