Incorrect 1098-MISC Form

One of the companies with whom I mystery shop sent me an inaccurate 1098-MISC form for 2016. Unfortunately, it was more than what I actually made (triple checked my spreadsheet and banks statements for accuracy). The company also typed in an incorrect federal ID number, which shows extreme carelessness from their end.

I tried contacting the company, but they didn't respond to my e-mail. I will try calling several times tomorrow but if they don't answer, do I go ahead and put in the correct amount on the form and take a big risk of being audited or do I just eat the tax cost of their mistake? We're talking $100 here.

Personally, I would try and get it fixed before filing taxes, since there is no place for notation on your tax return.

It is easier to fix it before the fact than after.

I believe that the only forms in the 1098 series are 1098, 1098-C, 1098-E, 1098-Q, 1098-T, and 1098-MA. I don't think there is a 1098-MISC. Did you receive one of these 1098 forms or did you receive a 1099-MISC?
Oops. I meant 1099-MISC form. The company did not answer or return my phone call today. I don't know what to do.
Hmmm, it took forever to complete my taxes but finally got them done. I had an IPSOS 1099 included. I received another 1099 about a week ago, a week after I completed my taxes, with a different dollar amount (sighs heavily). Next year I think I'll change my staycation to the last two weeks of February.
Sorry to hear that spicy1. I guess the trick is not to make $600 or more with each company we do business?
I'm not sure why it's a big deal. All you have to do is lower the amount of income that was not on a 1099 by $100. I would imagine there would be very few shoppers who did not have a least that much in income from companies that did not meet the reporting threshold. Obviously try to get the company yo fix it if possible but nothing to stress over.

If you properly report your income, a missing 1099 is a formality. Your income would have not changed, just the format it was reported.

Oh, I didn't clarify that I had received a 1099 from IPSOS, then completed my taxes, filed them and paid what I owed. Then, I received another 1099, also from IPSOS, for a different amount. The two different 1099s were off by around $150. I also reported about $16k from companies who did not send in a 1099 at all. I did almost $5k from Survey.com alone and since they, and the others, pay through paypal it is up to paypal to deliver a 1099k.

However, paypal does not send a 1099 unless the amount is over $20k and 200 or more payments. So, I'm going to leave it at that and hope the IRS will ring it out in the wash for reporting so much more income (and the taxes owed on it) than the amount showing on my 1099s.
