Rough shopping days for newbies

A relative is pretty new to shopping and she had a fiasco week. I try to be chill and laugh it off and let her know stuff happens haha. The gas station people panic when they realize you shopped them and beg for leniency, you bit into your food because it looked so delicious, your kid ripped up your receipt so now it looks like a patchwork quilt, the cashier rang you up wrong or rang you up to go but you ate in, you realized you could have ordered more for the reimbursement, your car is full and you need to find a way to give away two more gas stations worth of gas, and your photo is of a sandwich that looked like Edward Scissorhands sliced it for you. Oh, and you forgot what time period you were assigned and to print your paperwork check list for the photo audit tongue sticking out smiley We've all had some days. I'm being silly about all of this but she did have a heck of a first week really getting into shopping and not all of these things happened to her.

It really does happen, I had one day where I swear nothing went right, I scheduled three shops pretty near each other but they were all BANKS, which close at 12 on Saturdays! My Daughter woke up sick, I'm a single Mom, so I couldn't leave her. I found a sitter, did the two jobs, missed one and wrote a big note of apology to the scheduler. Went to the banks, ran out of gas, freezing cold, just a horrible day all around. I spent more on the sitter than the shops paid. sigh. life goes on.
Just don't dwell on Murphy's Law. You know, when you say, what else can go wrong? Even though stuff happens, try to concentrate on the positive points. For example, two months ago my power steering went out on my vehicle. I had finished all of my errands and shops when the power steering went out in the late afternoon. It just so happened that I was a block away from my home when it occurred. Managed to drive home. Instead of focusing on how much the power steering mechanism will cost me, I focused on the situation that my power steering did not go out when I was on the freeway, in another town or driving to work. Yes, I was inconveniently stranded until my vehicle was fixed, it took about two days to replace it.
I was driving to a shop, made a right turn, and my steering wheel came off in my hands and landed in my lap.

I was able to sort of drift to the curb...but I was one mighty scared old broad, let me tell ya!

I took my daughter to a petting zoo; I had my shop receipts in my jeans pocket. A goat at the petting zoo
ate my receipt!

I think the scheduler still laughs when she remembers that one!

I swear, as far as MS'ing goes, if you think it can happen -- it has happened to some shopper, some where!

Sounds like my son had been working on your car. grinning smiley

What happened? Did you have work recently done and someone left a screw loose?

Now I had been driving down the road. My hood was not latched down correctly. A wind turbulent on the expressway blew the hood up, actually blocking my driving view. Now that was definitely a "mighty scared old broad". Luckily I was able to slowly drive the car to the side of the road. No one was "currently" driving behind me. The hood had a "wind" crook in it now. Although I was able to close the hood. I did not felt safe, the wind was still blowing. I had to drive with my hazard lights on and 25mph until I could get off the expressway and back on local roads. I was on my way shopping but not MS.
It took 6 months of hitting it hard, when I finally decided be prepared for the worst. And when the worst doesn't happen; do the happy, happy, joy, joy dance after I'm home and all my reports have been submitted.

I've screamed at the top of my lungs...'GET OVER IT!', more often than not in my car while driving 75 mph. Works for me, 97% of the time. Some days, msing sucks and the only thing that changes it; is a nap.

It's part of the job. Gotta take the good with the bad, if for no other reason to stay sane.

Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning; the devil shudders...And yells OH #%*+! SHE'S AWAKE!
One of my friends insisted on signing up for every shop he could find on his first week. I told him over and over to start slow so he could learn how to pace shops. Bottom line after two days he was so burned out he quit mystery shopping altogether. New shoppers often do not believe the advice given to them by seasoned shoppers! It all sounds so easy when you read about the rules on paper. In his case he lives in the Seattle area and took several shops each day where he had to take a ferry over to an Island or two or three. True the shops paid well but all that ferrying back and forth took a lot of time.
We all have some chaos days, especially if they start off rough. It seems like if something goes wrong at 5:30 am, it's probably going to snowball until 5:30 pm 0_o But sometimes a day or three or five away from it can really refresh your routes and reports.

I wasn't exactly a brand new shopper, but had just reactivated myself into MSing right before Christmas 2016, when this happened on my VERY FIRST shop since reactivating... This is a true story from an email I sent to my scheduler, only some of the names have been changed to honor my ICA.

"When I texted you on the evening of Dec 20th to tell you I hadn't completed the XXX Pizza shop, I called it a shop from hell. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong. This is not the way I normally run my life and my mystery shopping business. I can only apologize for letting you down by not completing the shop. This is the story of my evening...

To start off with, you need to know I left home in plenty of time to get to XXX Pizza about 6:30pm.

1. Your assignment and the XXX Pizza website BOTH had the wrong address. It is given as XXX Lower [City name] Road. The actual address is XXX SOUTH Lower [City name] Road. The Google map their website links to when you click "Get Directions" takes you to Lower [City name] Rd and not SOUTH Lower [City name] Rd. The word South makes a big difference as it's the opposite end of the city from the other location. I called to verify the pizza place was open before leaving home, but originally did not ask for directions since I'd gotten them from XXX Pizza's own website. Now I had to call and get directions plus had additional travel time to find it.

2. It was located in a huge WalMart parking lot. I had to cruise the parking lot to find XXX Pizza among the several strip malls there. While I was driving down an aisle near WalMart, a woman backed out of her parking space and hit my car. She was talking on the phone and admitted she never looked behind her before moving. Her Jeep Wagoneer wasn't even scratched, but she crumpled my right front fender and broke my headlight. She didn't have a proof of insurance, but said she had insurance. She gave a company name and said her husband takes care of that kind of stuff, but they were separated so he just hadn't given her the card yet. I sure hope she was telling the truth. A few minutes to exchange info and take photos. By then it was about 7:10pm when I parked by XXX Pizza.

3. I had plugged my phone into the car charger for the drive. When I left home, I had about half charge, which was plenty to do the shop. When I unplugged the phone from the charger to go inside, the phone shut off. When I tried to turn it on, it would stay on for about 2 seconds then shut off again. I plugged it back into the charger and everything looked normal -- it said it was charging and it was cycling through the battery bars. I left it on the charger about 10 minutes, but it never added to the battery's charge. The phone would work while it was connected to the charger, but would turn off as soon as I unplugged the charger. I took the battery out and cleaned the battery and phone contact points and tried charging it again for a few minutes. Still the same - it would shut off as soon as I unplugged it. Somehow the charger had drained the charge it previously had instead of adding to the charge.

I wanted to cry because I knew the time measurements were critical for this shop. My phone was my watch, plus it had a lap timer/stopwatch for doing up to 20 time measurements. No phone = no time measurements.

4. By now it was 7:30pm. I just had to get in the door of XXX Pizza to start the shop by 8:00pm. Hmmm, I was in front of a WalMart. Maybe I could get a stopwatch and save the shop. WRONG!!! I drove back to WalMart and I really tried, but trying to find an item in a new WalMart SuperStore just 5 days before Christmas is a Herculean task. Employees directed me to Electronics then Sporting Goods, where I found a stopwatch and got an employee to cut open the blister pack so I could check if it could time multiple events, but it would display only one laptime. Then I was directed to Jewelry, where there were no employees but I found a watch that had a stopwatch with 10 lap memory. Success! I had to wait in line and go through the front checkouts since there was no employee in Jewelry. By then I had no idea what time it was. My receipt was timed as 20:16:44, which is 8:16pm. Aw, crap!!! I went to my car, and this time I did cry, out of pure frustration. Then I texted you.

I did not go inside XXX Pizza, and I did not park directly in front, so no employees ever saw me. If you will allow me to do so, I can go back either Wed 12/21 or Thurs 12/22 to do the dinner shop.

At this point, I really hope you'll let me have a do-over. I need the money, LOL. It was an expensive evening -- gas and time, I had to buy my dinner (at a different restaurant) with no hope of reimbursement, I spent $31.23 for a Timex watch, I'll have to get a new phone, plus there's probably a couple grand in damage on my car. I really hope the other driver has insurance as I don't have comprehensive on my policy. Also, I had hoped the phone problem was a bad car cord, but no such luck; it's doing the same thing on the wall charger. <sigh>

I almost asked, "What else can go wrong?" but I was afraid I'd get a demonstration for an answer. At least I made it home in one piece.

Reading this email over, I realize that this whole evening is kind of hard to believe. I've attached a copy of the receipt for the watch and for my dinner. I'm sorry I didn't think to take a photo of the exterior of XXX Pizza to prove I was there. I'm going to take photos in the daylight of the damage to my car and I can send you copies if you'd like. [Note sent later to my scheduler: The other driver did NOT have insurance and she did over $2,100 worth of damage to my car. The damage was NOT covered by my insurance as I have only liability coverage due to the age of the car. I did get the satisfaction of reporting her to the Dept of Motor Vehicles, who will hit her with a $1,000 penalty for driving without insurance. but I won't see a penny of it.]

Let me know if you're willing to have me redo the shop, and if so, whether you would prefer Wed or Thurs evening. Again, my apologies for letting you down."

Her response:
"That is quite the story. After that I might have stayed in bed this morning just in case the evening from hell was continuing into today. You certainly may reshop, just let me know when you're going. .

I am passing your story onto the higher ups to show them what the shoppers go through but still are willing to complete the shop. Thank you for your hard work."

IF THAT DIDN'T MAKE ME QUIT, AIN'T NOTHIN' GONNA MAKE ME QUIT!!! LOL
The retelling of your shopping experience made my day!

I feel for you, especially in the getting hit and the other not having car insurance. Reporting it to the authorities is not satisfying, since it don't pay the bull dog, (aka car insurance deductible).

So, I'm not the only one to have their car hit while on a shop! Mine was a hit and run while parked at USPS, doing a shop. $12 shop I sure wished I had blown off that day! Cost me $750 (my deductible).

That sounds like the worst day ever but I have to ask just one silly question. Did you not call the police to report the accident immediately? Many insurance companies won't file a claim without one no matter who is at fault.

In Florida it is a no fault state when it comes to private property (Walmart parking lot). The police will come and say they cannot do anything. They will not file a report. This happened to me at Home Depot to my brand new truck. I was lucky that the cop at least wrote a note that stated the other driver admitted fault while he was there. But, they normally will not do that.
OMG that's insane! I don't think I've ever had a wreck on private property. At least not that I can speak of. Guess that answers my question though!

I got rear-ended while waiting in the drive through lane at McDonalds for a shop. Thank goodness there was no serious damage and my car was 17 years old so what is one more scratch! The service was so slow it didn't even effect the timing of the shop.

I'm not sure about other locations, but in Austin, the police no longer respond to traffic accidents unless a major street is being blocked by the accident or there is a serious injury. On an Austin street a few years ago, a texting teenager in a Tahoe smashed into my car from the rear - while texting, his foot slipped off the brake and he smashed it back down, only he got the accelerator instead of the brake and lurched forward. My car looked like a crumpled tin can and was eventually determined totaled, although I was able to drive it the short way home. We moved the cars out of the street and called the police, who declined to come to the scene. The police officer who took our call asked if we had moved the cars from the street and if anyone was injured. He told us to exchange insurance information and said that we could go online to file an accident report if we chose to. Some of the smaller incorporated cities in the Austin area will still respond to traffic accidents, even those that happen on private property, but the City of Austin does not. I had no difficulty collecting from the teenager's insurance company even without a police report, and neither his insurance company or my own seemed surprised that there was no police report.
Where I live if there is any dispute as to who was at fault then an accident report is required by the department of motor safety. If you are in a wreck and the other person says yeah, don't call the cops, it was my fault, we'll just file it on our insurance and then a week later says OMG I think you were at fault, too bad. No accident report, no legal case. Doesn't matter if it is obvious, if there is any dispute it's thrown out without one. That's why insurance companies in my state won't listen to you until you have one.

If it's not on a public street, police will not come out to file a report. Life moves too fast in California for police to bother with an accident unless they need to control traffic or there's a death. A report has to be made to the Dept of Motor Vehicles when damage is over $1,000.

From DMV website:
"If you are involved in a vehicle accident that occurred in California, you must report it to DMV if:

There was property damage of more than $1,000 ($750 for accidents prior to January 1, 2017) or
Anyone was injured (no matter how minor) or
Anyone was killed.

Each driver must make a report to DMV within 10 days, whether you caused the accident or not and even if the accident occurred on private property. Mail the completed report form to the address on the form."

Maybe she was hit with additional penalties for not reporting the accident, besides the $1,000 penalty for driving without insurance.

Oh, well!

My windshield broke, and my left front fender blew off the car, one time when my front left tire exploded. I was thankful my dad had asked me to run an errand for him prior to my getting on the interstate and going 70 MPH. As it was, I was slowly backing out of a parking spot and had just cleared the car to my left so my car was the only one that had damage. The tire company (a major brand) acknowledged having defective tires and covered all my expenses.

As was said earlier, look for the bright spots. . .
If an accident happens while you were on your way to or from a shop and you itemize your taxes, you might be able to claim the deductible as an expenses along with your mileage as an independant contractor.
I'm glad other shoppers have days like mine.. lol. Not that I wish those kinda days on anyone at all, but I sure am glad I'm not the only one.

My day yesterday was supposed to be rather simple, I have (still) 3 shops to do at local hardware stores. They don't pay much, but March as been kinda slow, so why not?

I woke up yesterday to find my 11 year old dog with blood covering the entire front of her body and blood dripping from her mouth. She had been IN HER CRATE all night. Nothing in her crate with her except her rubber mat and a bath towel that she picked up a few days ago. And now a puddle of blood. Me and my son pulled her out, looked around to see where she was bleeding from, it was coming from inside her mouth. We tried unsuccessfully to see inside her mouth, we looked at all of her teeth and at least the top part of her tongue, but all we could see was blood. Soo.. off to the vet we went. Vet says to leave her there, she has a surgery, but as soon as the surgery is over they will sedate her and take a good look to see where the blood is coming from.

My son, went to TN to get a load of hay, so he didn't go to the vet with me. While I'm at the vet, my Uncle in CA called, his husband is in the UC Irvine Burn Unit ICU. He had a stroke in the shower and was scalded by the hot water. R(because I don't want to use his name) found him when he came home from work, unresponsive in the shower with the water running. Now it's 4 pm, it's too late to start going where I needed to go and I wasn't in any condition to be where people are.

Then the weather moved in, big windy storm, blew over my chicken pen, killed one of my chickens, crashed into the goat pen and opened the door for them to get out. So now ALL of the livestock is loose in the yard. And the vet calls, Michiko is just fine, the bleeding stopped on it's own and they were able to find the cut on the bottom side of her tongue that was causing all of the blood. But I can't get out of the yard because all of the livestock is loose and I need help to turn the chicken pen back over for the chickens to get shelter. And my son is STILL in TN.

My neighbor came over to help me turn the chicken pen over. my son fixed it the best he could today. Michiko had to stay at the vet overnight (she has NEVER done that before), and the doctors said the my uncle will come home eventually, but he'll need round the clock care from now on, and he's still in the burn unit ICU for now.

Today was better, I actually got to make some money and see my grandkids.
That's how it happens in San Antonio and Corpus as well. Taking pictures with your phone is become essential.

Hmmm.......rough shopping days...I wouldn't know. I mean other than getting chased by a love-starved goat on a zoo shop, or wearing the fall out from a dumping garbage truck when evaluating a landfill, or losing my wedding ring down a sink at a restaurant shop and having to take their plumbing apart to get it back, or falling on broken concrete at a gas station causing me to land in a puddle and nearly get arrested by cops who were watching, or having to out-run a meter maid before my car got a ticket or having to duck bullets while taking that "overall distance" photo at a gas station............nah.......

I put my name on the restaurant list I waited 45 minutes I was seatedt in the bar area I went and told the hostess that I wanted to sit outside of the bar area and the dining area i eas relocated to the dining area and then remembered i had to go sit at the bar for my shop. I sat at the bar before I ordered how crazy did that.. the hostess probably thought I was crazy
It's been many years since police respond to accident scenes in Los Angeles if there is no serious injury. One time I was in an accident where the middle of the intersection was the border between two cities. The police from the city where the accident started came by to wish me well and see how I was and informed me that my car was in Los Angeles after being pushed there by the car who hit me so I should not expect anyone to show up. Then they left as they were not involved.
You all have had some really awful days. I hope it will be smooth sailing (or driving) from here on in.

In Oklahoma, if you know a State Tropper they will sometimes do a traffic report on private property.
oh no! Heat paper tongue sticking out smiley Most restaurants and stores have gone to heat paper so you can mark it and scratch off. We used it at Hardees all the time because we could take our fingernail and mark off part of the items as we worked. Irons, blow dryers, and heat lamps will destroy a lot of receipts.
