If I quit a job as an editor, will the MSC allow me to revert to being a shopper?

I've considered applying to an MSC as an editor. However, I have read that most people can make more money as a shopper. If I accept an editing position and decide a couple months later that I don't enjoy the work, would most MSCs allow me to go back to being a shopper?

I am intrigued about editing, but I don't want to burn any bridges with a company.

They don't have to be mutually exclusive -- it totally depends on the MSC. And if you edit for one company, no reason you can't shop for another -- unless one or the other has a rule against it. I would ask the company you're considering signing up with.
A lot will depend on whether you are an employee or IC editor. As an employee the company can restrict you from working with other MSCs in any capacity. They should not be able to do so if you remain independent. Many IC schedulers also shop regularly.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

When I looked into editing, one of the perks across the board was being offered premium shops. I would think that you would never have to give up your shopping status.

At 8+ shopper conferences all of the editors that I have met were also very active shoppers. But, do check with the MSC before accepting the editing position.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
I interepeted the OP question to mean will the MSC be angry they don't want to edit anymore and forbid them from just shopping for them.....
Kinda asking "will i be blacklisted if I edit then quit editing"...
I don't have any experience with this but would say if you try it and find editing isn't for you to keep the lines of communication open and be professional. Give plenty of notice and try to work with MSC to finish projects until someone can take over for you.

When I was an editor, I was prohibited from shopping for the MSC I worked for (as were all employees). I could work for other companies, but didn't have much time to....
I was an editor for ACL and Ardent Services at different times in the past as an IC, not an employee. I actively shopped for them and other companies while I was an editor with no problems. Once I decided editing wasn't a good fit for me (because it involved commiting way too much time which interfered with other activities), I gave proper notice and worked out my remaining edits. I offered to hang in there until they found someone to replace me but both said it wasn't necessary. I am still an active shopper in good standing with both MSCs to this day.
Good to hear from someone with experience. I've been wondering about editing also. Thanks, JASFLALMT :-)
I worked as an IC scheduler/editor and was not restricted by the company I worked for from mystery shopping for them or any other company. However, I once offhandedly mentioned in an email to a scheduler for another company that I was completing a shop for that I too was a scheduler (it was an expression of solidarity, as in, "I feel your pain, I do this too." ) and both my husband and I were subsequently forbidden from doing shops for that company because of my relationship to the company that I scheduled/edited for. It seems that policy varies from company to company but I thought I'd throw it out there.
I recently worked as a scheduler and decided after giving it three months that I am a better shopper than scheduler. All of the flaky shoppers annoyed me. Anyway, I explained the issue to them and I am still a shopper with the company. I agree the hours are a bit much if you do not have to be at home all the time. For someone with health limitations or small children it is great but I do not have either situation. As for the money, yes, I made more last month as a shopper than in TWO months as a scheduler. Does that happen all of the time, not yet. I'm still working my way through new shopping companies.
Totally depends on the MSC. I shop for other companies, but I cannot shop for Shoppers' View. However, if I were to leave on good terms, I could start shopping here again (I do miss doing our shops!). I think it would be something fair to ask the MSC in the application process.

I was an QCer with SpotCheck for a few months. It ended up not working out, but I was a shopper throughout. Debbie created a second profile for me for QCing.
