NEW SCAM!

We have been receiving reports that shoppers are receiving text messages regarding shopping opportunities in their area.
I called the number, 1-866-749-1238. This is obviously a boiler room operation. They say there are many shops in your area and say they are in need of shoppers. You will be paid $50 for each shop and the shop takes 15 minutes to complete, Then they say there is a $2.50 registration fee and ask for your credit card number. THIS IS A SCAM! I told them I would go to their site. The web site they provided is fictitious. They are just after your credit card number.
Shoppers beware!

Of course it is a scam. No real shopper would consider doing this.

I would love to see you publish stats of REAL SHOPPERS who fell for this. Not people, not newbs. EXPERIENCED SHOPPERS.

I have restrained from posting on this site but because of the seriousness of scams I post to various boards to warn shoppers. It is not intended to be a debate on who responds to scams. As a MS owner I feel I have an obligation,to warn shoppers as new scams come up.
The stats who fall for the scams are not important.
This will be my last response to this issue.
That is fine, Doug. I think it goes to my point, that of course it was a scam, and *experienced shoppers* know that.

I am definitely not an experienced shopper and even I knew something like this would be a huge scam.

The first thing I ever learned here before starting to sign up with different companies is that you DO NOT pay to be a contractor. Asking for a credit card number is a red flag for just about anyone these days, isn't it??
Many new shoppers that don't know the ropes will think this could be true, get excited about the pay and join....not everyone is savy about computer scams. This continues because there are takers. Thanks for another warning...many new shoppers need to be alert and the forum is a great place to learn, actually the only place!!

Live consciously....
Remember, there are new shoppers on this board also. There are also still people who fall for that same old "Deposit check-send money" scam. Warning is good because there ARE people who fall for that crap.
The reality is that virtually all of those who are scammed in any way are not experienced shoppers, and they are not on these boards or they would know better.

That being said, it's good to post about this stuff because anyone who may be the target of a scam could just Google "Text message mystery shopping" or the phone number provided and find this thread instead of being scammed. I know from previous posts that people have been spared great expense by reading about scams here.

With that in mind; Doug...perhaps you could amend the title of the thread to be more descriptive of the particular scam and draw the reader's attention in.
Not to get off the subject, but, remember the New York scam involving people like Steven Spielberg, and many many intelligent people. Investing big money in his scam...he is in prison....to say scams don't happen to intelligent savy folks isn't true, people will do alot to make money, not knowing what lies ahead. Warning's such as Doug's is a good thing, and belong on this forum. We are not all street savy!!!

Live consciously....
