The shopper before me (take 2)

Culture and subculture. We are all there, somewhere... I love hearing about everyone's experiences.

In a previous job, I had to inspect people's residences. I often wanted to cry because people from all races and ethnicities had to let me into their homes. This was a legal requirement for me or whoever filled the position. I was not a threatening figure, but I was there to evaluate certain features of their spaces. I never evaluated personal touches, but those were there for me to see. Their eyes just looked.. hopeful... or prayerful... as if I should not notice anything personal so that it would seem as if a private part of their lives had not been shown to a stranger. I had to reassure and reassure and reassure everyone until the inspection was finished and I could leave the residence. I may have reassured myself more than anyone else.

For insurance purposes, we as auditors are invited guests on premises. But this is not enough. We have to work around the wariness.

Maybe or maybe not racism. However, it was definitely furthering stereotypes. We all grow up with a myriad of backgrounds and circumstances. Stereotyping is assuming people who share the same skin color or religion or gender or birthplace have shared the same experiences thus have the same worldview.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

I didn't read racism in this, either. Stereotypes aren't always wrong, anyway. Many of them have their roots in facts. It doesn't mean that --everyone-- of that particular demographic fits the type. For instance, the stereotype that Asians are smarter than other groups correlates with the fact that they, overall, have higher IQs. Latinos living in crowded houses is backed up by household density and birth rates. Blacks are likely to grow up without a father in the home and trailer parks are most likely to be mostly full of low-income whites. Statistics, not racism. It doesn't mean every person in a trailer park is the same, or that every Hispanic comes from a place where macho is the norm, or that every Asian person is going to be top of their class, or every black person is going to grow up without the benefit of two parents; only playing the odds.

When I first saw this title, I thought it was going to be one of those "The shopper above/below me [does this]" threads.

I didn't read this as a racist post either, but I thought CoffeeQueen's post was racist, calling her "white" rosie. whiterosie has never posted again. Too bad. She had been here since 2013. Accusations and slams can be hurtful.

roflwofl: If you are going to quote whiterosie, please quote the entire thing. Here it is. She talks about illegal activity such as attempted bribery and then some dishonesty, and then brings race into it. Many people would come to the same conclusion I did, which is that whiterosie has issues with race.

If you are going to dredge up months old posts in order to attack me, keep digging. However, I don't need this crap. I'm dealing with renovations and a torn up house on top of all the normal stresses in life. i won't be back until it's over because I don't need added stress from a forum. I have bigger fish to fry.
Rock on without me.

"I've had owners try to bribe me. I had one who said he was going to report me because he told corporate that no mystery shoppers were to show up after 1:30 p.m. And I have had them try to convince me that they have never received less than a perfect score so my report will be questioned if I find anything wrong.

At least where I live, most of the owners come from other cultures. The whole audit thing is looked at differently."
I've edited my post. I didn't actually mean to quote whiterosie. I meant to quote Kathy, who quoted whiterosie. I agree with Kathy that it was not a racist post. And I think it's a shame that whiterosie no longer posts since the incident.

I also did not read racism into the post. In fact I agreed. Some other cultures view women differently than the prevailing American culture. Some other cultures view children differently, view the elderly differently, I could go on and on.
I agree with you, roflwofl....I understood completely what Rosie typed...I also completely understood what she MEANT...often, women are treated as less than human in most Middle Eastern countries...most women/girls cannot go to school, or work, and cannot leave home unless they have a male escort...what Rosie was trying to say had to do with their reaction to women approaching them as authority figures..its not Rosies fault...
I don't blame her for not posting on here anymore...I've been here just a few days and have already had my run-ins with several snarky, snide, really nasty people...it was a mistake thinking this could be a fun Forum and one could get help or help others with their shopping....
Sad to say, that doesn't happen here...so I'll probably leave here as well....too bad...COULD have been a great Forum...but I see no moderators at all jumping on the abusive, accusing posters....
You are very kind and thoughtful, and hopefully Rosie has stayed and read your comments...
This is a very informative forum. I've learned so much. Above all, I believe you get in what you put in. I haven't had any drama with boards members and it's very easy to avoid it. If you notice someone that's extra snarky (and I have) just ignore them; the same way we'd do with someone in real life.
To add to @eyelove2shop, I'm learning a lot, too. Too much to go away. I might be one of the snarky ones that people object to, but most members understand that we all have bad days and sometimes post knee-jerk reactions. Toggle as necessary, and carry on. The reason for being on the forum is to improve your business. Take what you need and ignore the rest.
