May I ask advice on a jewelry shop?

I signed up for 2 jewelry shops - not knowing that in both shops I need to pose as a *diamond ring* buyer. I just thought it would be jewelry in general!

Uh, 30's female here. Not the typical diamond ring buyer. Right?

I need to come up with a scenario that I can pull off. I'm not married and never have been. Would it seem weird for a woman to be shopping for her engagement ring by herself? What about if it was a replacement ring for a married woman?

I know that my dad had given my mom money to buy her ring. They got divorced when I was 5, lol.

I don't think I'll ever sign up for these shops again. Sigh.

Does it have to be an engagement ring? My scenario was replacing my ring. Nobody batted an eye I was shopping by myself. Really, why should they? Women do shop for their own jewelry and some even like diamonds. I think the idea of it has to be a gift from a man is a bit outdated.

It doesn't specifically say engagement ring, but the dollar amount and that its diamonds lend to that impression. I've rarely ever stepped into a fine jewelry shop, so I really wouldn't even know who the typical buyer is. I just need to have some sort of story in my head so I don't get flummoxed during what I lovingly call "the interrogation" Heh.
They have plenty of non-engagement diamond rings that fit the description. I always just say I'm looking for a gift for myself or my mom or something like that.
You just finished your MFA degree and deserve it!

Or, you just paid off your last student loan, and you deserve a treat!

Or you work in an office full of hound-dog men, and you're darn it gonna wear a ring to keep them away!

Or you lost the ring your mother gave you, and want to replace it.

An endless world of possibilities.....

I'm not all that enamored of diamonds myself. I did grow up with a mother who loved them. My stepfather wasn't the type to shop for jewelry so she was just fine taking his credit card and going alone. Definitely if a fashion piece is allowed, you could have tons of reasons for wanting one. Actually if the sales associate doesn't ask, you don't have to give a reason or make an excuse.

I would say, my original wedding ring has a small stone, and we are upgrading. I am shopping around before making my decision. Remember to act like its true, don't be timid, you'll be fine, woman look at diamonds all the time...it's a new world...and most times, they don't ask for a reason to sell a diamond.

If this is the shop that I did (huge bonus), it's hard to even find anything other than the most expensive sets in the store that fit into the price range that you are given for the scenario. I first looked at a necklace and it was around $500. Ugh. It's sort of the wal-mart of jewelry chains.

I dunno. Mine doesn't have a huge bonus - I've just been doing a lot of these little ones to get experience and gain credibility. I'm new to my area so its an excuse to get out and about.

The hardest part of it was finding something expensive enough to fit the scenario. Otherwise, it's pretty simple.
I said it was for my anniversary. Unless you look really young, make it for your 10th year anniversary. Don't worry about not having a current ring on, just know what type of metal you wedding ring is (yellow gold or platinum, etc).
I did a Jewelry shop today. I just said I was looking for diamond earrings for my moms birthday coming up. My boyfriend was with me and I didn't want to say we are looking at engagements rings so I just chose that scenario. I felt bad that the lady said she'd put the earrings in the back and wait for me to return with money to do a layaway. She was very persistent trying to get that $2500 sale.
The jewelry shops I've done haven't specified what to buy, just that it has to be diamonds. I usually ask for earrings. If the sales associate asks for the occasion, I say I got a bonus at work and I'm treating myself.
So it's not good for my record, but I did something I've been trying not to do, but cancelled both shops and indicated that it's because I didn't have enough info when I accepted them. If it had been anything other than a diamond ring I could have pulled it off, but I just didn't feel like I could have pulled it off at all. If I could have done earrings like blackgold78 did or any other jewelry, I would have been fine.
I'm sorry to hear you cancelled the shops. I did one of these a few months ago. Same scenario, a diamond ring purchase. I told them things were getting serious with my boyfriend and i was expecting him to pop the question soon. They bought it hook line and sinker. They invited me come back with the boyfriend when we were ready to purchase.
About a decade or so ago, "right hand rings" became a thing for women to buy for themselves. They wear them on their right ring fingers. No need to cancel in the future. Sometimes things that seems odd to us are completely normal to the next person. Believe in your scenario and go with it!

Doing what I can to enhance the life of my family! I LOVE what I do smiling smiley
leaiso, sorry to read that you cancelled. However, I do understand your reasoning, and if you cancelled well before the due date, it probably won't adversely affect your shopper record.
I've done that shops twice. We're the same age range and it's totally normal for women our age to shop for jewelry ourselves specifically diamonds. The first time I said that I think my boyfriend is about to propose so I wanted to look for an engagement ring and wanted to get fitted for my ring size. I already knew my size and the sales associate took me right to the diamond section without me even mentioning diamonds.

The second time, I stated I wanted to get a nice modest everyday ring that looked polish. Of course, I dressed rather nicely for this particular visit and looked like someone who would purchase a diamond ring to wear everyday. I wore my diamond studs on this shop.
I've done several of these shops. I wore just my engagement ring and said I was looking for a wedding band to go with it. I've also done it with diamond bracelets...one was 6 carrots total and way beyond $5000! In my dreams, but boy did it sparkle!
Speaking of rings, my preference was Silver, however, aging has broadened my taste. My sister gave me her precious three band diamond (after going into an assisted living home), and I wear it on my right hand...when I do my bar audits I put it on my left hand, to keep those hound dogs away, it is gorgeous and a memory of her in better days. I think doing the job would have given you growth and made you realize it's not that big a deal.
I understand we need to be comfortable in our jobs, but it is just a job.

I have never done jewelry shops mainly because I know nothing about jewelry and don't want to spend the extra time it takes to get educated by the salesperson and then have to report on it all. However I am curious about men these days. For the scenario of "I am getting married", which is just another assignment with "acting" are there no more men out there who hate shopping and women who hate dragging their men around to shop? This would be the perfect time to "pre shop" a ring if you were marrying a man like my husband who agrees to go but I know he will just be standing their acting like it is time to leave the whole visit. I prefer to shop by myself for anything that takes some time. Then I bring him back when I have found what I like if I want to feel like he was involved in the decision.
30 year olds still get married and many of them still want a diamond ring.

Its been my experience after doing about 5 of these shops, the sales person does not try to educate you. They merely tell you the carrots and price for each item.
Well Anne, if that is the case maybe I will try one some time. Thanks for the tip. Probably true on all those retail shops for things i never buy...cell phones, plans, furniture, mattresses...when I (rarely) do them I get involved with a whole lesson on how to choose.
You can always say it's for your birthday, upcoming anniversary. They don't care. I do these shops all the time. it helps that I am 35. But, really you could say anything. The one thing that I learnt while doing shops is lie with with the utmost confidence. They focus on sale and not the reason. It's a part of their sales etiquette to ask for a reason. just have a date in mind coz they usually ask. These shops are the easiest and pay well. I even got reimbursed twice for buying upto $100 a piece plus the job fee. I cannot reveal the name of the store but they have a pretty selection.
I'm mid-30's and divorced for ~10 years. I just say I don't plan to get married again but there was a ring in an ad I saw when I was younger that I loved, and I want to buy it (or a similar one) for myself. All 100% true, but I'm sure the story could work even if it's not.
Couldn't. Had to be a diamond. Though I guess I could have pretended my birthday was in April. Never thought of that.
Because it had to be diamond.
I think the OP was seriously overthinking it though. It's a ring. You want one. No different than if it were a necklace or earrings.

I worked in the jewelry industry for years, and don't see a problem. Women shop alone for their engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary rings, right hand rings, etc. Now-a-days it's almost more uncommon to see a man by himself shopping for en engagement ring. Worse care scenario. Just pretend you are about to propose to your girlfriend. These are easy-peasy. My biggest struggle with these shops is that I know I know so much about jewelry and diamonds in particular (I'm certified by the Diamond Council of America) that it's hard for me to keep my mouth shut when sales people are lying through their teeth about what they are trying to sell you.
Oh.my.word. So I decided to try another shop. This one was diamond jewelry in general, so it was more comfortable. Only for the life of me I couldn't figure out why they were sending me to the outlet store where there were only a couple of items in the price range they wanted me to shop for. Made NO sense. The whole shop felt like a total FUBAR.

Oh. Because stupid me didn't realize there was another major mall in that town and it was at the other mall. Not the outlet one.

IDIOT. No wonder everything went sideways.

So now I'm hoping they'll let me reschedule it and I'll try again. I also finally came up with a good scenario if I ever get another ring shop, though.
