No Posting on Social Media

For most companies, I've seen warnings along the lines of "don't post about your shop on blogs and review sites or the shop could be rejected." I've applied to a few destination hotel shops recently and am curious if I'm expected to go completely dark on my personal social media while I'm on a shop like that? I can't imagine that a vacation-style beach picture on Instagram would possibly interfere with the shop or out me as a shopper, but I obviously don't want to get an expensive shop rejected just because of that. (Apologies if this has been addressed in another thread; I couldn't find anything related when I searched.)

I would say that as long as you don't post your location or anything identifiable, you should be fine. So a picture on the beach should be okay, but not the hotel room. Also, remember that your phone records your location when you take a picture, unless you turn that feature off. Some MSC may require the location data be attached, but you shouldn't post any pictures publicly with the location. This may be a pain to deal with if you have one smartphone/camera. Maybe get a cheap digital camera for vacation pics? Hopefully someone with more experience in these types of shops will chime in.

Don't forget to enjoy yourself!
They key is in not tagging yourself with anything that mentions the location or brand....especially on something like IG where you have no control over your followers. And don't post to an account that has your actual name.

Hotels have social media staff that specifically follow that stuff. My friend and I were checking out of a hotel recently and took a photo in front of the hotel just before departing. She tagged the hotel in her post and thanked them for the stay while we were in a taxi on the way to the airport. By the time we checked in for our flight, the hotel had liked the post, responded with "Great having you" and started following my friend.

If you are the social media director at Hotel A and suspect someone of being a shopper, follow them and see them checking into Hotel B (a sister property) a few weeks later, how much effort do you think it takes to forward a pic of that shopper to the social media director for Hotel B?
Actually, Instagram can be locked down. All of my social media is locked down. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram all require my approval to see my posts. Where the problem comes in on IG is when you tag something. For instance if you tag a photo as being at Wonderful Hotel A then people can see it by looking at that tag. Or if you use #WonderfulHotelA anyone following that hashtag can see it.

But yes, I never ever post on social media about any shop, even if it doesn't state not to.

Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil and you're judging what they do and don't believe.
Have never figured out what all the fuss is about with the Twitter and the Instagram.
I get all of my sports news on twitter. I like IG better than Facebook for photos.

I have and use Facebook daily due to my family being spread out. You can fix your settings and not accept from anyone. I don't do MSing on Facebook nor ever mention it. Because you have an account doesn't mean you have to use it for work, This work won't limit my time, I know where to go for jobs, however, Companies TRY to solicit new members, but if your not open to it, figure it out. My guilty pleasure is playing Candy Crush on Facebook, and seeing what my daughter is doing....get with it, social media is here to stay, take the good it brings. Most folks don't talk about their work, that's what this forum is for.....duh!!

Added to update from the Mexico Earthquake, my family just posted on FACEBOOK they are all safe...thank you Facebook, I would have worried all day.

another reason to not post on sm while doing shops is then people know when your not home. many robberies & breakins happen so posters tagging where & when they are is invitation for burglary.
Only if allowed to read your posts, and only friends are.....no one sees my posts that I haven't allowed in. I spoke about settings above, guess u didn't read that or have a FB account. Thinking robbers sit on FB looking to break into homes is quite hysterical......smiling smiley

@irene i wasn't talking to you. replying to thread in general. sometimes breakins are done by people who know you. contractors who work on your house, neighborhood kids up to no good. happened to my dad from one of brother's friends. kid was on drugs. im not on your fb but you post alot of info in here. i just dont keep track cause its not important to me.
My last name is not listed, that's why I prefer this forum over the other. I just had a Plumber out, in business for over 40 years, should I be afraid of FB he has my address, and probably does better than I with the prices charged. $500.00 for a disposal...I should be robbing him...smiling smiley

Glad it's over my head....you continue to worry about being robbed via FB...that's your right, I have other things to do....o and o I mean oh and oh.

Here are just a few of the many articles recommending against posting in real time on social media platforms while on vacation. At least one mentions how even if your settings are private, the settings of friends could still allow the information to get out.

Gee how interesting, my daughter and a couple friends went to the Bahama's on a Yoga retreat and stayed on a beautiful beachfront property the retreat owns. I so enjoyed seeing this gorgeous place, just pictures of it which can be found on the computer anyway. Some make a problem out of everything and use negative links to back them up..I'd rather live without fear, but too each his/.her own. I've also been privledged to see my daughters travesl throughout the world by her posting her fabulous pictures on Facebook wouldn't change it for the world. For those afraid, don't use it, but don't use the forum to put fear in others.

I agree. My facebook is pretty locked down. Plus not many people have my address. I would venture a guess that less than 10 people I am facebook friends with could find my house, and of their friends, I can't imagine there are any that would be able to. Plus my facebook is pretty darn locked down. Even if I put my address in my about page people I am not friends with couldn't see it anyway.

I don't live my life in fear of everything either. I just wanted to point out MsNinja didn't pull the idea out of thin air.

Definitely not, there have been instances. I would venture a guess that almost all of those cases would be people like a friend of mine who accepts every friend request by anyone and is very active on social media. He has like 2500 friends. Or it would be cases where people are friends with people who are less than upstanding citizens. As in druggy that friends his dealer on facebook.

OK, I'm no whiz at this, but let me tell ya. If I want to look you up on Facebook, I'll use your REAL name. If I see you're in Timbuktu, and not expected back for 30 days, and I know you live in a mansion, there are NUMEROUS sites where I can get your address, home phone, etc. Many of the sites are free, and some of the ones you pay for are cheap, like $19.95 a year.

So post your vacation pictures AFTER you get home!

My nephew, who is a security expert, actually said it's best to stay off social media.
Security experts are also paranoid. At least the good ones are.
And you cannot find me on Facebook.

I never announce I'm gone until AFTER I get home---that way I can go through my photos for a Facebook album and share only the good ones.

Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product. Eleanor Roosevelt
When there are mishaps on FB, it is the fault of the user telling way too much. Posting pic's from a vacation are always done when we return at least for me and my family....just takes knowledge and good strong settings.
I'm on now 7 years they don't have my soc or bank and most robbery's are done by drive bys not FB. Many do post too much info. and allow all to come in which invites strangers you don't know. Be careful and smart with everything in life, Would you not fly because the plane may crash I think not...to each his own. Info can be gotten from this forum as has been shown recently.
Edited to add...anyone can find your address by goggling your name not necessarily on Facebook...my address is not on there. I also put on a phony email address ..that's all folks!!

If you know someone's name and county /state they live in, you can find the address they live at or property they own very easily since it's publicly available.

Not if that person is smart and protects themselves!

My home address is not listed anywhere under my name and the only people that have it are those I give it to. I have no concerns about posting when I'm away from home...unless I didn't tell my boss I was going out of town winking smiley

True, if you don't buy a house under your own name (like as a company name or under someone else's name) then it wouldn't be available. But for the average person that buys a house and their name is on it, it would be easy to find.

I wish I would've thought of something like that ahead of time lol. It sucks having such a unique name that the moment you search me, you can find my home and all sorts of other stuff. Sometimes, it plays to my advantage whenever someone wants to look me up and see if I fit a profile or if I fit in with a certain class of people.
