"Needless novelization" is exactly right!
They wanted to know how many pieces of chips were on a table and which food items had crossover errant pieces of lettuce in the sour cream. A blow by blow description of each food item on the line. It was ridiculous. AND a physical description of each person you interacted with- but do not use race, body size, baldness or age to describe anyone! PICKY to the UMMTH degree. Lost sight of the bigger picture..
You must have had a different editor than me. Never reported the number of pieces of chips on a table. I just provided the general condition of the tables and floor regarding any trash or food debris. They didn’t require a description of each food item, only the ones you ordered. The physical description only required male or female and any unusual things such as tattoos or body piercings. I found the revised report that was in use at the end was manageable and not difficult to complete.
Exactly right, kenasch. I was on their editing team for approximately one year. I did not know any editors who wanted to know how many pieces of chips were on a table and if the MSC owner knew that an editor was asking that, there would have been stern words to the editor. No editors were trained to ask the shopper for a description of each food item on the line, only the ones the shopper ordered unless there was something wrong with the appearance. The only physical description required was gender, tattoos, piercings, and hair color for anyone who didn't have brown hair. I don't know how that's picky. And not using race or body size is just politically correct with most MSCs. Sure, you don't say "Fat white and bald" about someone, that's pretty rude. No need to hurt a crew member's feelings by mentioning body shape or taking a guess at their age. What if someone was actually much younger but you wrote they were older than they really were because they had a receding hairline at a young age?
