How will this one end? Any guesses?

I had a great shop for a reputable MSC today. $200 to open a checking account, but I had to portray myself as a non-English speaker and only speak Spanish. The purpose of the shop is the confirm compliance with various legal and company regulations.

I attempted to open the account, but nobody in the bank spoke any Spanish. (They do have access to telephone interpretation services, which is part of what they are required to use...) The banker, citing a lack of Spanish speakers at the bank, said that they could not help me and referred me to another location. Feigning misunderstanding, I asked twice more to open the account, but was simply referred to the other location. As I departed the bank, a security guard was hanging out by the exit and watched me go to my car....

I am in communication with the MSC and am curious how this one with play out.... It seem strange that I, as a white guy, feel like I was discriminated against for being Latino......

How were you discriminated against if they didn't have a Spanish speaker to help you? Do you mean because the security card watched you? That's his job.

They have interpretation services they are required to use..... I have done countless bank shops and have never been watched quite like that....

Wow!! What kind of neighborhood was the bank in? Just curious.

What's done is done. An egg cracked cannot be cured.
There are 3 kinds of lies. Lies, Damn lies, and statistics.
The bank has interpretation services available, and are even required to use them, but instead chose to blow off the customer. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see there was discrimination.

I always wonder what would happen if one of the Americans I know who speak Chinese took one of those Chinese speaking shops.

Plenty of white people in Mexico, Cuba, and Spain don't speak English...

Maybe the staff are unaware of the interpretation service.

The client bank is OBLIGATED to make the staff aware of what tools are provided to avoid discrimination. So, if this was to check for violations, one, at least, was found. Systemic failure of management to make staff aware would, if shown, be a HUGE potential risk to the client, for instance. Individual staff can be retrained; changing corporate culture can be a lot more of a problem. So, now the client has a better idea of what to foucus on discovering. This is one o the big reasons that we have jobs, lol.

wales, yes, the client is obligated to make the staff aware of the tools, but that does not mean the staff will use the services. It may be a simple matter of information overload on Day One of training, or the employees suck at their jobs. Either way, hopefully the client will do something about it.

Regarding Training: The employees in question were bankers. It is unimaginable that they are unaware of their interpretation services. I have learned that this particular bank had the ability to get interpretation in ANY language.

Regarding Location: The bank was in the downtown area of a wealthy suburban city. There are two bedroom apartments within walking distance of the bank that rent for $4,000/mo. or more.

I have had a couple exchanges with the scheduler where she asked (essentially) how hard I tried to open the account. I sent the same explanation that I wrote above - without mention of the security guard as I cannot be certain that it has any correlation. I have not heard back since last night. I went ahead and filled out the report to the best of my ability as I wanted to make the deadline and the scheduler did not answer whether or not I should do so. I am certain that there are some fascinating conversations going on somewhere with this one....

Did I read that right? You were paid $2010 to open an account? Hell I'm hispanic and speak spanish, where do I sign up? lol
Oops.

In that ritzy neighborhood, non-English speaking customers are probably not desirable to the bank's current manager. The MSC should accept your report because negative reports are 50% of the job. The opposite happened to me. I went to a bank in a heavily Hispanic neighborhood where the personnel all spoke fluent Spanish ... and very broken English. I had a very hard time understanding the original banker, who finally had to call another banker whose English was nominally better. It all went into my report.
The neighborhood is well-acquainted with non-English speakers, though they largely speak Chinese, Korean, and Hindi.... The banker with whom I spoke appeared to be of Indian heritage. The city does have a large Latino population, though they mostly reside in a different area of town.

Frankly, deciding that a customer is less desireable on the basis of native language is exactly the sort of root-cause dicrimination that such shops are designed to expose. So, it is no excuse for bank management to tolerate the events/situation described.

I'm curious, too.... After making the visit, I notified the scheduler immediately and said that I would submit the report unless I was directed to do otherwise. She asked me a couple of questions about how hard I pushed to open the account. I answered, but she did not say anything as to whether or not I should do the write-up. I submitted my report a couple of hours after that communication (Tuesday) and have not heard anything since... I

And now you know what everyday life is like for a person of color.

We were just in Nordstrom Rack in Seattle a couple of months ago. My son (white without question, but 18 years old) was followed around the store the entire time. He met up with me later in the store, as I was in the women's section; he went to men's. Sorry, not sorry. He was profiled. Annoying, but he will survive. Imagine dealing with that every single day? I am very empathetic towards people who deal with that.

I'm white, but the only time anyone talks to me in Spanish is in a Spanish speaking country unless they know me. Oh wait, the produce guys in the Inland Empire supermarkets will speak Spanish to me. I speak fluent Spanish. It's a bit of a freak show to watch. My son speaks fluent Mandarin. In a million years, nobody would believe that we don't speak English first. I can pull off French, no English, but not Spanish, no English to open a bank account.
I don't think the security guard watching you meant too much. Other than a guard just looking out the door and watching a customer go to their car. Was the guard a minority? Did the banker speak English to you? or did he speak in his language?

You should get paid. Probably why the scheduler asked how hard did you try.
I'd like to know if you get paid for the shop. I get those postings on a regular basis. Please update us.
The security guard probably watched you because either 1) nothing else was going on the bank, 2), the security guard thought the banker just blew off a potential customer. What nationality was the security guard since it was not mentioned?
Security Guard: He was a white fellow. I did not include him in my report as I can only say that it seemed weird. He watched me all the way to my car and while I was emailing the scheduler. It is likely just a coincidence.

Payment: I have not heard anything back in last week and the shop shows up in my log like everything is fine. I assume that it is good for pay. I'll update here if that changes.

My only question at this point is: Typically, I can only do two of these shops every six months. That would have been my second. Will I be able to do another? smiling smiley
