What do you wear when you shop in #&$^hole counties?

I had a route today and I had a few shops through the $^%#hole part of Hartford, CT. I didn't know beforehand this was the $&%^hole of the #^$%hole part of the city and I did not dress accordingly. Tip for all the route shoppers: Wear clothes that make you look like you have no money.

Downtown Hartford is such a complete joy to shop, isn't it?
Waterbury is actually worse, though.

Ever been to Bridgeport? I wouldn't shop there.

I am sorry to know that you had some difficulty during your shops today in Hartford. I just did three shops today in Hartford too, in 06101 and 06106. Previously I have been asked for money during a shop when in 06106 but I didn't see it as a concern as the verbal exchange was respectful. Oh, and I wore sweatpants and a sweatshirt today. Not because of the area I would be in but because it's what I wear during a winter weekend. I have worn this to a credit union, grocery store, post office (even in West Hartford *gasp!*), pizza carryout, dealer oil change, convenience store, etc. Now if I was going to the jewelers, chocolate shop, or overpriced kitchen store in Westfarms Mall, I may choose to wear Juicy Couture but I think my chest hair would be off-putting.

Haha... what? You removed the entire post because 4 letters in one word? I always assumed the forum software edited “bad” words and put the symbols in.
I went to college in Bridgeport, and probably would not shop there smiling smiley I can still remember the first time I went there to tour the campus they steered us around the bad areas when they gave us directions into the college. Once I was living there, I realized they took us 15 miles out of our way so we would not see that the college was surrounded by seedy areas. (and that was in the 80's!)

Not often, don't think I've gone into the worst areas of it, though.
I stick to going there for hockey!
Unless the weather is too warm I typically wear an armored motorcycle jacket everywhere, mostly for fashion purposes, but it could stop a small knife if needed.

I will gladly shop Manchester and Avon, but Hartford is on my 10 foot pole list.

I'll even go out of my way to avoid Hartford when not shopping, even avoiding that stretch of 84 if I need to. The traffic is bad enough. If I could shop in Avon all day every day, I would. winking smiley
The only time I've been to Hartford, other than driving through it, I went to the Mark Twain House. I've never been anywhere else in Hartford.

Do you guys ever give in when people come up to you and beg for money? Right now I'm gonna stay adamant and say no. I used to give in a give them a dollar, but now that I have a lot more muscle and can defend myself better(years of owning a punching bag at home), I can bestow some haymakers if it gets physical.

Last year I did a gas route through RI and CT. I'm from MA, but not the CT side of MA so I don't do much down there.
I ended up in Willimantic. I've never been so scared to get out of the car in my life. That was the fastest eval I've ever done, and most of it was done from inside the car.

Seriously, nobody cares that you're offended.
Willimantic used to have serious drug problems, there was a little documentary that included the town in its mini series because of it. I frequently shop in Willimantic because it's a town over from me. I had an mp3 stolen from my car and a bike stolen in willimantic. Best thing is to dress like a bum and no one will bother you.

I don't go as far up as Hartford but when I go the the Bronx or Brooklyn I usually wear tailored Bermuda shorts with sandles and knee high white socks. And of course I'm wearing my "make love not war" T-shirt and red MAGA cap
I had a grocery shop in a bad area of miami last week, pulled up and was afraid to get out of my car so I contacted the msc and canceled.

I love shopping the poorer areas. The people are more down to earth and not so standardized.
It may be nasty to you but it IS someones hometown. A lot of someone's hometown. Respect
When I'm in feceshole places, I dress pretty much the same as everyday life - jeans and a hoodie. I make certain to be carrying and have occasionally brought my dog, leaving the window open, and I take the beater car. More and more, though, I'm deciding that there are certain areas around where I live that aren't worth shopping once the sun goes down, and others that aren't worth it any time at any price,

ETA: Dave, I don't give people $ any more. It almost always goes to support a drug or alcohol problem. Our local food kitchen has a billboard nearby that says the dollar you gave to the person begging on the street could provide three hot meals instead. We give through our local church, national organizations, Zidisha and Kiva. local politics, etc. Much more impact than someone's next fix.

Virtue signal alert.

Teri, I'm sure there are tons of shops for you to choose from. Also, "poor" does not automatically mean a bad neighborhood. There are neighborhoods around here that are nicely kept with average crime rates whose residents are low-income, and there are other neighborhoods that residents don't give a hoot about their subsidized rentals and have high crime rates. The first may be "poorer" financially; the second is far "poorer" in terms of people.

I would not call any of the places I've spoken about nasty, but they all have bad areas, and if you are unfamiliar with where the bad areas are, you could get yourself into trouble.
Here in So Cal it would be hard to not shop bad areas. Since I'm a frugal person to begin with, my car is over 10 years old and I avoid wearing anything designer (I am talented getting stains on everything I put on) so I don't need to change my appearance. Now heading to an upscale neighborhood for a tour today, I'm dreading having to reach into the back of my closet and pull out some better-known designers so I fit in.
There are areas in Ct. that have homeless shelters and rehabs. Unfortunately, you have counties with million dollar homes and counties with a lot of challenges.

MFJ would happily go into those undesirable area's...if the price is right.
