Plus, you can buy a gift card as your inside purchase, though a lot of locations won’t let you buy it with anything other than cash.

It's usually the gas station that locks you out. Are you suggesting to call the gas station company to let them know you'd be using your card at many of their stations?

Hmm. I interpreted that as calling the credit card company to give them a heads up about your upcoming use of their card. Hopefully, the credit card company would lift or delay activating their security alerts for the given card.

Not with one big brand you can't (not a client of the "big" gas station MSC). The entire shop will be invalidated if you buy a gift card as your purchase.

Any time a gas station charges a gift card purchase as a credit card, it immediately drops 5 points from my overall rating and goes in the explanation.

There are pre-authorization amounts at my gas stations. Unless you have $100+ on the cards, the cards will almost always direct you to go inside to the attendant instead of paying at the pump.

I'm not sure what brand you are talking about but every gas station gift card I've ever used the pump was aware of how much the card had available and would let you pump up to that exact amount. I've never had a pre-authorization on a gas station gift card.

At usually the 4th pump I get a message from my bank which asks if I was using my debit card at so and so location, to which if I reply yes so I dont get locked out most of the time. Though I have been locked out too. It would have been terrible if I had no other way to pay.
Have you guys encountered compromising of your card number?
I dont use cc at pumps for ms ever.

I have a bunch of MasterCard gift cards received for various rebates that have this issue. I had to think about it a little more; you’re probably right, if you’re talking about gift cards dedicated to the gas station though.

I thought it was pretty self explanatory that luckygirl was talking about store brand gift cards. Although in my area there are a few stores that can pull the amount left on those types as well. WalMart's gas station comes to mind.
