Supermarket Grocery Depatment

This may seem like a silly question, but I'm really serious. For Kroger shops, what do they mean by grocery department? To me a grocery department in a supermarket is any food aisle that doesn't have its own specific department (like deli, dairy, meat, produce, bakery). But some of these stores are HUGE and they carry almost everything. So do sections of the store like clothing, furniture, household goods, etc. also count as the grocery section? I ask because when I do a shop and have to go looking for grocery employees to evaluate, I want to know if I can evaluate an employee in these sections.or should I limit my search to the food/beverage aisles.

By Grocery Dept. they mean food and drink. Clothing, household etc is considered General Merchandise. In fact, through Merchandising, Grocery Stores are divided in Management and maintenance by Grocery Manager and GM Manager.

btw, on one of my recent shops, walking away after the interaction with a new Meat/Seafood Associate who was being trained by the current Meat/Seafood Associate, I heard the current Meat/Seafood Associate say to the new one "People ask stupid questions like that all of the time. They expect us to know so just tell them whatever you think. Sometimes I #$@ around with them and tell them something stupid too. That way the talkers don't come back." I LMAO.
I have always thought that "grocery" meant "dry goods," of the food variety. Cereal, flour, spices, lard, etc. PLUS canned goods, condiments (relish, mustard, etc), but not bottled drinks, fresh baked goods, meats, fish, etc. Opinions?

I agree with you.
I did an online dictionary search and considered how grocery shopping has changed. I would suggest asking about items that are common to the huge department stores and the stores that do not have the additional departments (such as clothing, etc.). Your options may exceed those that are available in the very small stores that have limited items.

The store I do my non MS shopping at regularly is small so I suspect that if I were shopping it, any associate in the aisles would be fair game (except of course for vendors anyway). But my first MS grocery shop was at a store about 3 times as big. I could easily have gotten lost. I've never liked the really big stores to shop in. I figure if I want furniture or clothing, I'll go to Target or a department store or order on-line. I don't really want to combine food and general shopping. I also don't grocery shop at Target for the same reason. Thanks for the opinions. I'm ready for my next MS grocery shop now.

just did one. GROCERY IS LIKE, THE MIddle of the store, canned foods, tp, mayo, sauces, soups, pet foods, etc.. cereals, baby items, juice, soda, gravy, dried and canned beans, tomatoes, etc..
Agreed. Grocery department is also referred to as center store. Perimeter departments are deli, bakery, coffee shop, produce, meat, seafood, frozen.
Water, soda and juice is part of the grocery department. Me too, there is one far from me the size of a Walmart. I can see when someone has taken that one, must be a new person, and then no one takes it for a couple of weeks and I take it twice and it's my car payment. Still in and out in 25 minutes.
I just did my first grocery. It was rural and heavily bonused. Multiple departments in a pretty small store. Waiting around in each department to be acknowledged, then if no acknowledgement within 3 minutes, to leave and return to wait another 3 minutes.

It felt awkward at times! Many employees walked by me at various times but not a single one asked if they could help me. I really didn't like reporting that.

Around here, many of those also have a bar/grill, so can be combined. When they're both bonused, it's a really profitable shop. Until they're bonused, they're not worth it though.

Just out shopping around...
