IC vs employee

A number of the MSCs have updated their privacy policies to comply with EU rules. This is from one of them I saw today. Interesting definition...

"Employee" means an employee (whether temporary, permanent, part-time, or contract), former employee, independent contractor, or job applicant of (REMOVED) or any of its affiliates or subsidiaries, who is also a resident of a country within the European Economic Area.

Just as with any regulation or law, there must be a set of definitions that will hold for the purposes of reading THAT PARTICULAR law/reg. In the US, different laws define "state" for the purposes of that law to include or exclude Washington, DC, Guam, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. That does not make them into states, it just saves time/confusion when reading the law. This is why the first thing I had to learn about reading labor law was to turn to the LAST part where the definitions would be found. The same is true of terms like "family" that are defined differently for purposes of different laws. Neither the overall legal definition of family or of state is altered by its different uses in different laws.
