This is a first for me...

Today I was told by a scheduler that she wanted to schedule me for a shop I had requested but the editors didn't like one of my last reports and would prefer she didn't schedule me. I have done a lot of shops for this company and I don't recall that shop that was mentioned as being problematic or getting any more clarification requests than usual. In the email informing me of this issue that I was not aware of previously, I was asked to explain the wide variation in my shop grading...

I replied and said that the only 2 reasons I could think of would be that a) I do use multiple devices to enter shops so it was possible it was my browser not showing me typos (that does happen depending on what device I am using) .and/or it could have been fatigue as the shop she referred to is a long drive from my home and I was trying to get it in before the deadline. It just occurred to me that possibly it is another scenario-could it be editorial differences? I am pretty sure that I don't have the same editor each time and I do know that some editors are more particular than others.

Anyone else ever had this issue? It just surprised me as I have done another shop since this shop and nothing was said about any editorial concerns when I was doing that shop and submitting it?

I am surprised you were told, usually they just skip by and schedule someone else, so, having told you, they needed to give you a reason. I know I haven't been scheduled for shops I applied for with one MSC due to many new shoppers and schedulers, trying to give everyone a chance. I ended up writing and was called, and
told to call personally when seeing a job I wanted, and it worked.

I'd ask them to be specific about what they meant with the wide variation, to give you specific examples. I'd preface it by saying that you enjoy working for them and want to become the best shopper you can be and that you hadn't had any problems before and want to know what specifically you need improvement on. Then see if they give a legitimate answer.
Take this in the spirit intended. I counted the word "that" 11 times in your relatively short post. Before anyone gets upset with me, early in my MS career a company told me I did the same thing. They said it was unnecessary and a crutch. Another thing you mentioned is relying on spell check. Spell check is not going to pick up everything. For instance, I have to be careful when typing "that" because I have a tendency to type "than." Spell check doesn't look at context, only spelling. Ironically, by reducing my reliance on "that," that problem was solvedsmiling smiley

Spell checker also does not show you when you correctly spell a word but you are using the wrong word:

too, to, two
there, they're, their
for, fur
sight, site
Since they have opened up the conversation perhaps they would be able to send you a copy of the report with a list of the issues so you can review it yourself.
Oh, man. I remember when I was an editor and a shopper asked me if they could see a copy of the finished report to help themselves improve their writing skills. I really wanted to do that. My supervisor said no. But I thought (and still do) that it was an awesome idea. Not all shoppers really want to know, but the ones who do are truly showing a desire to improve that should be encouraged, IMO.
Early in my MSing a couple of companies provided more feedback than the standard, points deducted for spelling or grammar. While sometimes frustrating, it made a big difference in my reports.
