There are many factors church-goers look for: comfort, temperature inside of church, cleanliness, parking availability, sound, restrooms, childcare, choice of music, if any, lighting, time of service, etc. I have been to mosque, Mormon church, few others even if don’t affiliate myself with any of those. I did not feel uncomfortable or intimidated. It is an evaluation and that should be the mindset when signing up for a shop.
@SteveSoCal Thanks for the question. We accept anyone - no belief required! And right now our active churches are all Christian denominations.

@guysmom and @Bonnie888 Hey in regards to our community awareness section, we ask our mystery guests to ask someone at a local business if they are aware of the church - it is to gauge if the outreach the church is conducting is effective. Does that make more sense? We understand it can be uncomfortable, but it is to help the church see if they are really known in their mission field. If you have other questions, let me know!

Wouldn't it be somewhat natural to go to a local business and as part of a back story say you are new to the area and interested in finding a church... and what do you know about this one? I would certainly expect to be paid extra for that! Maybe a lot extra but I don't see it as distasteful.
I do the exit surveys/interviews. If the interview is not covert, a clipboard would make it natural and I would do it.
The reason I would not do these is different than what many folks have stated here...

There is something sacred about a person's religious beliefs, whether the person be Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Jewish,.Christian, Shinto, Norse, etc... I willingly will visit places of worship for any faith if I am there as an attendee for a ceremony, to support a friend, or to learn more about a particular religious faith or practice. Heck, when I am lucky enough to travel, I love visiting local places of worship and learning about how folks practice their particular faiths - it's a great way to learn about a culture. However, to go to a worship service as an evaluator feels sacrilegious to me - even if I want no part of the faith itself.

I get it: The church leadership teams want these evaluations. Attendance in Christian churches has been declining over the past several decades and their aging congregations desperately want to make their services to be warm and welcoming. I have no issues with this pursuit. I simply cannot go to a church under false premise.

I wouldn't want to tickle him, but I'd gladly be a dominatrix and beat the crap out of him...and I'd do it for free.

Definitely a brain picking device to get the scheduler/owner info and free advertising of this company...liking everyone and answering on an individual basis is a waste of time and space and boring.......you made your point, do what Rolfwofl advises, he is a respected member of our shoppers forum. This is too much!!

I am enjoying this thread. I would do these shops, but they do not have any in my area. Maybe they will someday.
Irene, I don't think it's too much. A lot of things are being discussed on this thread. The entire discussion is very informative. We are sanely talking about religion, religious beliefs, informing the scheduler of different reasons why we would or would not shop a church, etc. What's next? This is beyond whether or not a shopper would shop on a Sunday.

Ive found this thread to be quite interesting. Im sorry you are bothered by it Irene. Maybe just stop reading it?
I can't stop because I've started.....some posts are interesting, I'm saying the scheduler doesn't have to answer every post, and due to her/his pushing me to do it after my plea of "NO", I did get annoyed. I was trying to find out if these Church's are part of the Born Again religion and I couldn't get an answer. I don't believe Catholic Church does a Mystery program, and can't get an answer. Those that want to do this, good, different strokes.
I am entitled to point out my view, somethings are not ethical as others have said....and the difference of opinion makes it interesting.

My only experience with a church shop was one of collection control; I was to hand a missionary priest two marked $20 bills. Unfortunately, a substitute appeared for the service and properly placed the cash in the bag; the MSC decided my deviation from the instructions was unacceptable. I appealed and was begrudgingly paid 1/2 my $40 fee.
I feel weird using the OMG in this thread, LOL, but shopperbob, that takes the wafer (cake).
The church bus picked us up when we were kids. The whole neighborhood of kids. It was a Christian church. We were more excited to go to church than school. They served all of us food and even though we had better food at home, the common sharing was lovely, they provided candy bar prizes for bible verse memorization, had activities like basketball teams. The adults really went out of their way to show us what life means, what a loving, caring parent looks like and the results of following in Jesus' footsteps. It was a beautiful time.
When I was in grade school we had something called release time every Wednesday afternoon in all the public schools. All the kids walked over in groups to what ever their church was. My brother and I stayed in the classroom because we were not interested in religious education. We got to color or read. One of my friends thought the idea was to visit a different church each week to see what each was like. Her mom went over to the Lutheran church to pick her up the second week and she wasn't there. It's unfortunate that she was not running the program because I think her idea was great and maybe if we had that sort of education different religions would have been more tolerant of each other back then.
One of my friends is in church limbo. There is a generation gap at her church. Generally, the long-timers want to sing in parts and stay in the modest brick church. The youngsters just want to sing little songs (because they don't read music and can't do parts) and build a new church. While the church congregation is dwindling, the activist members are pushing for a bigger, badder building. For now, my friend attends services in the trusty, if dull, brick building. She never knows when or if they will break ground on a new structure in which the ever-smaller membership would rattle around and be lost.

I don't know if mystery shop would help those people or that church.

Jersey, that's nice!

My church has a lot of activities throughout the year. Back in November, they asked for ideas for small groups. They got them. They have a day care center. They have social dinners every third Sunday after Church School. They have a walking group a few times a month and a flea market.

@foreverkid Touche! But at times we have evaluated Seventh Day Adventist churches, however, a bulk of our jobs are on the highest attended Sunday services.

Wishing someone (anyone) would actually do one and come back and report, the rest is just talk.

Irene, exactly, we are talking about different topics under this thread. What's wrong with that? Someone, maybe in another thread, did say that they did it and how beneficial it was to the church they shopped.

I am finding it refreshing that a company rep is actually answering questions. Irene, I did not see where anyone tried pushing you to do anything. I saw them respecting your opinion and everyone else's.

Irene, please edit your post where you tried to quote me as it now looks like I said those things and it is not at all how I feel
Very, very detailed report, including subjective, "How did you FEEL about xxx" essay questions. Each section (and there were many) required several paragraphs. A couple of report returns for EVEN MORE detail. Not worth the base pay. Ask for the instructions and evaluation form first. Then ask for your price. MSC was great to work with, though.
