Supermarket "stealing" shop

I read the requirements last night for a chain of local supermarkets.

The MSC wants you to put a large item on the bottom of a cart, proceed to the checkout, and then see if the associate notices the item.

They then tell you not to steal anything!

I couldn't believe the instructions. There is no way I could do this. This same MSC has shopped other stores without this requirement- they just asked if the associate looked under the cart.

That is not an unusual request. The ones I do require it each shop. If they don't notice it I take it out and pay separately or tell them I forgot it was there and don't really need it anyway. If they want you to leave with it without paying, that's a different story, but I've never seen anything like that.

Not unusual at all. Most of the grocery shops I have done require putting something on the bottom and waiting to see if the cashier noticed it. A part of the cashier's job, just like saying "thank you," is ringing up the right cost for items and looking under the bottom of the basket. A huge amount of money goes out the door at almost all stores (grocery, Walmart, Target, etc.) because of items on the bottom of the basket that are not noticed by the cashier. One grocery chain I used to shop (which discontinued its shopping program) required that you put something on the bottom of the basket and not tell the cashier. If the cashier did not notice, the guidelines required the mystery shopper to leave the store with the item, not pay for it, and report it. The first few times I did it, it upset me. After that, I was appalled at how often the items were not noticed and I left with them. And, of course, I always reported it. I always carried the shop guidelines in my pocket in case I was questioned by management. I never was questioned.
It's not so strange. There's a bar code down there, under the basket. The cashier is supposed to check for "forgotten" items. Part of that process is to scan the barcode - can't scan the code unless the cashier checks the lower area of the cart. No biggie.
I love these shops. I have done so many my garage is full of bottled water, big packages of toilet paper and I give bags of dog food to the local animal shelter.

I used to snatch them up, too. In my area, they've gone down to $17-20, when I used to see them as high as $70.
I used to love those shops. There is no necessity for stealing. Wait until everything is rung up and if the cashier gives you the total and hasn't checked for the large item then you say "did you get the dog food? " She adds it to the total and out you go.
Even if you are not supposed to remind the cashier, you do not have to depart with unpaid merchandise. Just leave it at the service desk on the way out or give it to any staff member, saying that it was forgotten and you do not have time to go through the line again.

Poor customer service? Don't get mad; get video.
Cashiers aren't the only ones who forget to look at the bottom of the cart. I've seen abandoned carts in the parking lot with large items still under it.
since the company is not mentioned can i ask which grocery chain this is? I used to do these years ago and havent seen them in a long time.

I used to do these grocery shops all the time. If the cashier didn't ring up the item, I would say did you get_____ on the bottom. I still do the grocery shops, but they got rid of the large item on the bottom of cart about a year and half ago.

The ones I do are with the MSC famous for narratives, fine dinning and fast pizza. They still ask for an item on the bottom of the cart and whether it was scanned. I also just say I changed my mind if I don’t want it and leave it in the store either way.
I used to do bunch of these. Per guidelines, once the cashier gives me the total, I am suposed to pretend that I forgot the item and hand it to cashier.
This is for a different MSC. They are paying $10.50 towards food items, with no other compensation. I bet you all can easily guess the MSC!
The $10.50x ones are the ones I do regularly. (usually bonused, but not always) I find them easy and it sure helps with the grocery bill. It's not a big deal about the bottom of the cart thing. Just take it out before leaving the store, or point it out and pay separately if you want the item.

We have shops that use this scenario. For us, when the cashier calls the total, you say something like, "Oh, I forgot about XYZ. Could you add this, please?" We have not had a shopper report an issue during the 3 years I have been with Shoppers' View.

As someone who used to work at a grocery store, I would encourage you to not worry about the scenario. It is extremely common to forgot about something in your cart. The nice thing to do would be to bring it to the service desk or leave it with the greeter (if you can't bring it to the cashier's attention). However, if you aren't comfortable with that, it is not uncommon to have customers leave items in the cart when they leave.

Are these the shops that used to be with Service Check? I didn't do the jobs often but really miss them. If so, would someone please share the MSC they moved to. It seems like I would have found them by now with all the companies I'm signed up with but I haven't.
This is how the ShopRite shops have been for as long as I've been doing them. I've done dozens of those shops and never had an issue.
This is for Shoprite. I'm not comfortable with doing it. When the job was posted, they did not include the guidelines. I emailed and asked, and they said the instructions would be available later in the month. The other supermarket shops for this MSC did not have this requirement, so I was surprised to see it. I have never stolen anything and never would, and this comes too close to that.
Niner, you don't attempt to leave the store with the item at Shop Rite. You either buy it if they notice it, or if they don't, you pull it out before leaving and say you forgot it was there. Then you can either buy it in a separate transaction or say you really don't need it anyway and leave it there. You are not attempting to steal and the MSC doesn't want you to attempt to leave without paying for it. Sometimes, they'll notice the item and I don't want/need it and I tell them to remove it because I don't really want it anyway.

I see what you are saying. It's having an item in my cart though that has not been totalled, after I have paid. Or, if they catch it, I can't with a straight face say, "oh, I forgot about it." I was not thinking we were supposed to leave with the item.
I knew I bought a jar of tums and a pineapple. Nowhere to be found at home. lol

I can just say. Did you get this? I don't have to say I forgot, just politely checking they got it.

That's a perfect solution.
