Hazmat, Food Pantry, and Cops

Dang! I leave for half of a day and come back, and we're talking about blowing up pet shelters and the bomber is a mystery shopper! OMG! How funny! lol

Mercury, SoCalMama? I wonder what all has mercury in it? So, tuna can't be shipped (lol). Thermometers.

I'm a terrible person to answer that. I am a scientist. The first thing that came to mind was a mercury switch for an explosive device. But yes, thermometers. That's going to suck when we send in our thermometers to have them certified again.
So far, I have yet to hear anyone finish the question and ask me, "lithium batteries, perfume...". They just ask, "Any hazardous material?". So, I doubt they will add mercury when they ask the hazardous material question.

Wait, that is a great question: how did the bombs get through USPS security?!

Whaaaat, he didn't want to go through the line to the counter and have someone ask him, "Is there anything fragile, liquid, perishable, or potentially hazardous such as lithium batteries or perfume?"

Hey, do they need to change that to..."such as lithium batteries, perfumes, or bombs?"

A one-pound package is what a small pipe bomb would weigh. That is probably why they had the cops contact you.

Pro Evals-Audits - I guess I freaked them out by sending them 1-2 pounds of items. LOL, I am sure they don't normally get a 1 pound bag of rice to feed all them many people. If I ever send to another pantry, which I doubt I ever will, I will put my phone number under my address. Call me directly. No need for cops to get involved.
Btw I am also out of Miami

Oh my! That makes sense! I haven't thought about that.

Where are you sending your hazmats to? Have you tried calling them and checking?

Nebraska is pretty close to the middle of the US, How much rice can you eat, Cease? Want some beans to go with it ;-)?

I would suggest do not send any packages to foodbanks. Just got off the phone with postal inspector.
About a year ago I had been sending clothes to a donation center in zone 5. One day I got a very angry voicemail from the manager who wanted me to call her back about the packages I had been sending. I didn't call back but I sure didn't send any more packages. That's when my actual friend in zone 5 began to get boxes of rocks from me. She doesn't get angry. She thinks it's funny.
The cops in your town must be very slow. My wife is a Sgt with LAPD and they would laugh if they got a call like this.
Well i guess they evacuated the food bank due to the unknown package.

Anyone want to buddy up? Im 331
I just always assumed (silly me) that people had called and set up relationships with food banks they were sending food too. I totally get in this culture now that random unasked for packages of rice (or whatever) would be disconcerting to the recipient. I am lucky in That I have two homes that are zone 5 from each other so I can easily mail to myself back and forth and usually have something that needs to be sent anyway.

I am in Southern CA (shocker, I'm sure). For my Zone 5, I found two teachers - one in NM and one in OR. I send school supplies and food for the food bank, since they both donate.

Otherwise, I send stuff to my kid in college, cat food to my friend 60 miles away, or eBay stuff when it sells and I have shops ready to do.
Lets buddy up @stormraven73

What did they say?

The MSC might want to change this information in their instructions since now that this has come to light. I hope I don't get a call or a visit from the postal inspector, too.

I thank everyone that gave me addresses to partner up with, so I will have places to send my hazmats to. I am blessed to have this forum.

Shocker is bad word around here. I am not ready for an earthquake.
You're right, SoCalMama! I heard "mercury" yesterday from a shop.

Actually, they will be adding Mercury to the list. I am not sure when it will change, but I was told that at the Post Office last month.

I found a German Shepard Rescue in Washington. She will accept every can of Pedigree I can send. I buy the Pedigree at $0.79 a can during my Kroger shops. I buy my boxes in bulk at Staples for $0.63 each. I use Penny Saver papers and such to stuff the boxes. Shipping is $9.85 from most of the facilities I shop.
I have a shipping buddy in Arizona for the Hazmat and they seem to let all kinds of stuff through. I keep getting boxes of rocks. Sometimes one, two, or more. maybe that was how the Grand Canyon was formed it was shipped somewhere else. Oh and I'm in 74011 if you need a shipping buddy. Just send rocks though I would not want a porch pirate to get anything worthwhile.

At my hazmat shop today the post mistress thanked me for being honest after I told her yes to her question. The way she said it sounded like I was the first person ever to say I had something hazardous in my package. She was so thankful. I think it would be pretty easy for those pipe bombs to slip thru...we have all had a large number of hazmats go thru okay. I once had a clerk tell me it was okay to take the package even though I said it had hazmat in it. The clerk said that since they knew about the hazmat material they would just put my package in a different section of the plane.
2stepps, send me your mailing address and I can send you enough rocks to keep all the porch pirates away. Could you see the faces of the porch pirates that stole that package? HA-ha! Merry Christmas to you, porch pirates!

I wonder what will happen if you knew you were mailing something hazardous and answer no. Do bombers really answer yes?

I answer yes all of the time and then act baffled that I can’t send 24 oz (or whatever) of perfume. I buy my stamps and move on my way. I guess I can’t send my nephew a laptop battery either. Shucks. I’ll just pick up some holiday stamps. I literally have 20 books of stamps.
One clerk went off on me for shipping for my mom. You know that they can’t take it if I don’t know what’s inside? Hahaha perfect. Stamps please. I’ll tell my mom when I get home. That would be quite a party trick, since she died in 2003.

I hope those 20 books of stamps are "forever" stamps... Ha-ha!

Same for my mom. I just say I dropped her off for a hair appointment and will ask her when I pick her up.

Will say I loved those jobs the year of my daughter’s wedding. I got enough stamps for the invitations, thank yous and enough to give to the bridesmaids for their shower invites.

I have a friend in my Zone 5 and she was my HAZMAT box address. It took 3 shops before someone slipped up and she got the two paperbacks I sent her. Bless her heart, she wanted to know if I wanted them back.
