Grocery Store Employee Name-Tags Turned Around

This is one of the few problems I encounter! As if we’re not being creepy enough getting close to these associates and asking crazy questions lol! But sometimes I think it’s intentional. I knew someone who worked at a store that was shopped (not by me) and she said they knew the day/time frame for the shops because the manager would give them a pep talk to be extra courteous that day.

I say in a pleasant tone, but directly, "What is your name?" The employee immediately gives me his or her name due to the surprise of my asking. This approach works well for me.
When I worked in a steakhouse in the early 2000s, our manager would "punish" us for forgetting our nametags by making us one. We also had to introduce ourselves by this name.
I still have my one-and-only punishment name tag that my manager specially hand-printed in extra large font and all caps on the DYMO.

GERALDINE.

(It was extra funny to me, because sometimes my mom would call me that when I was little and being sassy...)
I don't mind asking for names, but I shop an electronic store where the client wants a first and last name. That gets fun when most of the time they don't wear name tags and won't do a quote and asking for their last name seems intrusive and unnecessary,as their first names and description should be enough!
I wouldn't worry about it. I've been doing mostly grocery shops since 2011 and I've never been made by a store employee. All the shops I do allow for a description (male/female, hair color, approx age, height, weight, etc) when the badge is not visible. Might want to check with the scheduler first.
They wear name tags on the sides of their caps in both ShopRite and Stop & Shop and it amazes me that nobody on the management level objects to it. This is an obvious attempt to hide their identities from shoppers and mystery shoppers alike.. and it looks so unprofessional....
