Whaaaaaat? Sonic servers do not expect tips?

This was news to me: "Tipping is not expected as carhop delivery is part of the Sonic brand and business model. However, if you choose to tip you will not be reimbursed for it"................I always tip at a drive-in Sonic but not when I go through the drive though. I am surprised that Sonic has this stance.

"Expect" is the key word. Just like any other fast or casual food restaurant. Some restaurants do not allow tip jars.

Never the less, this is about the reimbursement. You can tip, just will not be reimbursed for it. Outside of table service restaurants, we can not get reimbursed for tips on most fast and casual restaurant shops.

I always tip them, and I always know it's out of my own pocket.

I wouldn't stiff a waitress/waiter. Those kids do all the work of a waiter/waitress, so I always tip them.

May be why I've never been outed as a shopper, LOL!!!
My daughter is 32 years old and has worked at Sonic as a roller skating server since high school (what can I say, she's REALLY committed!) These servers are not like servers in a traditional sit-down restaurant, they are paid at least minimum wage to start and of course, like my daughter, the longer you've been there, the more you are paid. The roller skating servers also make more than the ones who don't skate - skating is not required, but encouraged. Therefore, I do not feel a need to tip them like I do a server who makes less than minimum base pay. So I don't.

Having said that, my stance infuriates my daughter to no end - she DOES fully expect to be tipped.

Good to know they finally changed their pay policy. When I worked ther (many, many moons ago) we were paid like wait staff.
I believe it's entirely dependent on the franchisee and locale.

I tip the carhops 100% of the time. It's on my dime and it's the cost of doing business. smiling smiley
