For alcohol and tobacco compliance shops my understanding is the shopper must be of legal age. I could be wrong.
The account that I did with my child required him to be 17 when the legal age was 18 to buy cigarettes.
Neither he nor I felt bad at all. Every single cashier had to override his ID to sell to him. He had a perfectly valid ID that said he was 17 and also responded honestly when asked if he was 18 or not. The ID was scanned and showed a prompt on the screen that said to not sell to him, yet they did 1 out of every 4 times. He did not wear glasses, have facial hair or wear a hat. The ID is vertical for goodness sake and has a big red stripe across it because he was not 18 years old. What else do you need?!
So, fired, not retrained. There was really no excuse. That's the store's policy.
There are other age-compliance shops, but this one required the buyer to be one year younger than the legal age to buy.
